My wife’s sister, who is a total “health/sanitary” FREAK and I can’t imagine is a big fan of the fact that I have tattoos, mentioned to her my wife “Hey, it’s not a big deal, it’s his choice, I guess…but just watch out when you have kids and if one of them needs a Bone Marrow transplant, because he won’t be eligible to give them a transplant, having tattoos”. I have no idea where she got that from, so I have to ask…Is that true or not?
All I could find on that was that you can’t donate for a year after your last tattoo…but it definately doesn’t rule you out…maybe check in your area…but I have never heard that before either…
Hi
It may vary from country to country but you cannot donate blood, plasma, or marrow for a year after each tattoo. (I rang our blood donation team in the UK they confirmed 12 mths for both but stated on marrow that you have to be 18-40 and in good health. They also state sample screening would be taken anyway as standard).
This is because it would take that long for Hep and HIV to show up in the body fully.
I think they are just trying to scare you as the tattoo does not penetrate the bone so would not affect the marrow after the tattoo has healed.
I would speak with a professional about this who is not connected to your family and get a full independent report on it.
Take Care

As has already been stated, it only disqualifies you for about a year from donating blood or other body parts because until recently, scratchers who didn’t know hygiene from their assholes outnumbered the professionals. Hell, they most likely still do, but at least the professionals are readily available in most areas now.
But, in response to Matthew, I don’t think they’re trying to scare you out of getting your ink, I think they’re most likely misinformed. There’s thousands of myths and misconceptions out there about tattoos and piercings, and they’re most likely repeating a half heard, and less understood, comment they were told like fifteen years ago.
In short, research, find the proof we’re right, then educate them.
Love. Peace. Metallica.
KH and Matthew are correct…
According to the FDA 9United States) and GHA (German Health Authority) tattoos/peircings only exclude you from donatiion of viable human tissues and/or fluids for a period of 12 months. This is enough time for any bloodborn pathogen to develop enough to come back reactive in a test.
The othe idiocracy in her statement is the assumption that either you or your wife would be a match to your child. This si not always the case. There are many times when outside sources are needed because immediate family is not an exact match. Perhaps your wife’s sister should be more concerned with whether or not your wife would be willing to bank the baby’s cord blood. This is a much more viable resource for future health problems.
BTW…what a pessimist. She’s already planning for your child to have a life threatening disease of some sort? Come on…
