8 inches is NOT a SMALL tattoo! if it’s that big, then it’ll take one to two hours, depending on the detail involved. if you mean SMALL, then maybe 45 minutes. it’s painful. needles are going in and out of your skin, so it won’t tickle.

This is to the guy who commented on the “saggy birthmark”: She may as well show it off now well it looks good. Do you really see an older lady, perhaps a mother, dressing in such a way that you can she her lowe back tattoo??? No! That would be inappropriate in most cases. So this is really not a great point against tattoos.
Having said that, an 8″ tattoo is huge and took me about 4 hours for intricate flowers on my upper back.

I’ve got three tattoos. One on my lower back, my first. It didn’t really hurt, more like a stingy annoyance. Second on my foot, that one hurt like a mother. Third on my shoulder blade, didn’t hurt at all. My first is like 5″x1″. That one took about 45mins. The second about the size of a orange, took a couple of hours. Third about the size of a grapefruit, also took a couple of hours. Make sure you check out the tattoo parlor you go to. Make sure they autoclave all the needles, and that the needles are packaged and single use. The best references to get are when you see somebodies tattoo and you like it, ask them. People are always glad to talk about their tattoos. They will tell you who did it and where.

To the guy above wtf?…a saggy birthmark?…tattoo’s arent birthmarks…..anyways…i dont think you should do it on the lower back…i think its a fad that ended a long time ago…i think if you get a tattoo it should have a real meaning something special to you..and in a nice place…i think behind the neck is cool…but whatever you decide im sure you will look cute…lol …good luck..

The answers to your questions really depend on the artist doing it, how detailed to flowers will be, will there be shading or just straight color? But like someone else said, make sure to research the shop if you can. Visit them first before you make an appointment. The pain varies from person to person, really. The best advice I would give is to expect excrutiating pain. If you expect the worst, you’ll most likely be surprised that it really isn’t that bad. Mine hurt, yes. I thought it would feel like someone cutting me or poking me with single needles, but it ended up felling like really bad razor burn. (yes, tattooing is poking you with needles, but 5 at once feels different than one, duh.) 😀
Once the artist gets going, tho, if feels kind of numb.
