I saw a documentary about tattoos not too long ago. It was pretty rad. Tattoos made in prison are usually made of piss and rubber from the heels of boots. The inmates also ghetto rig their own tattoo machines. How sanitary is that huh?

Anyway I found out from watching this documentary that Russian prison ink symbolizes an inmates rank. A cross around the neck means a prince. This also means do not mess with this person. The cross generally goes hand and hand with a ring around a specific finger ( I can’t remember. ) Another one is a candle. The candle symbolizes how quickly your life could be gone by being in the same room as this person. Anything to do with eyes on the back or bum means prison sex slave. I guess sex slaves have very provocative images tattoo on them by force. If the face is tattoo then the person is expected to either be put to death by the prison/state or other inmates.

    Crazy stuff huh?

There’s a tattoo I’ve been curious about. It’s three dots in between the index finger and thumb. The three dots look like a triangle if you were to connect the dots. What does this mean??? Is it gang related or drug related?

Hey Demure, Interesting aye. Tattoos have been used for Rank purpose for thousands of years.
Not much for em to do inside, so art plays a big part in their lives….Their colours.
In NZ i have heard guitar strings are used for needles & shaders. Handmade machines from a bent over spoon & video machine, or tapedeck motors hooked up to small AA batteries.. Bloody hardcase alrite.
Its common hear for x cons to have a teardrop tattooed beneath their lower eyelid. The more times inside, the more teardrops.

I’ve seen the dots twice. Once on this kid who was into meth and cocaine. The other guy is a frequenter at the liquor store where I work. He’s about 25 and looks Latino I may talk to him about it the next time I see him. If I do, I’ll tell ya what was said.

I have a friend who has been to prison and he said the spider webs on the elbows mean the amount of minoritys you have killed. The more rings the more you have killed. And dont forget the tear drops. Solid Black tear drops mean you have served 10+ years in prison and a outlined tear drop means 9 or less. A black outline tear drop with red shading means you killed someone in prison.

The spiderweb on the elbow is so common nowadays in America that I doubt it really means that anymore. A marine in one of my college classes has one and he sure as hell hasn’t been in prison. Another guy with one seems too much of a pussy to do that. Soo.. I dunno maybe the prison made ones look different than the ones done on the outside..?

My brother spent 15 years in a texas prison and was recently released in October. He is full of beautiful tattoos, all done by a single needle and home made ink. Never have I seen tattoos so nice and could not believe that they were created with a home made gun. My brother was recently hired as a graphics artists by an Art network called ConvictedArtist. They really digged his prison style art and there is obviously a huge market for that art in clothing and advertising. Just look at Affliction clothing, Tap Out and ConvictedArtist Clothing, they are a hard core image created to appeal to MMA, UFC and even surfers and skaters. prison art is big and not every artist knows the trick of that trade. How these convicts learn to do that art is beyond me. I recommend all of you guys check out my brothers art work on ConvictedArtist.com
You can see some of his art samples by visiting the site here:
