Hey all, new to the forums and really just singed up to ask a question before I get my first tattoo.
I’ve wanted this tattoo for a while and now that I just hit 18 i am kind of having second thoughts. Ok here it is, I want to get the word “Atheist” tattooed on my upper back. Probably in old English or something, not plain text. I am just not sure if I really want it. I mean I am truly an atheist, its just times change and things happen. Like what happens if I “find god” later in my life(doubt it) or I meet a girl who I like but is a god lover or something; I dunno. Also I don’t really want to piss anyone off although I have seen more offensive tattoos then what I want.
This won’t be my last tattoo either. I plan on getting a full sleeve that stems off my back(not sure about details on that yet, let you know when I get more money :p )
But what do you guys think? I know you will probably say “ultimately its up to you and you have to live with it” Its just I don’t want my first tattoo I get be my first regret ๐ .
Let me know what you think! ๐
THX
If you’re already having second thoughts about it – then don’t do it. In my opinion you’ve got to be 100% happy with your design before you make it permanent.

Ya, but I am happy with it totaly. Its just a bold statement you know.
Bold statements have to come from bold people who don’t care what anyone else thinks but themselves. If you’re that kinda person who can shrug off opinions of other people, then go for it. Getting a tattoo with the possibility of something changing your mind about the topic is generally not a good idea for a tattoo… It’s almost Taboo.. like getting the name of your -now- lover who could turn out to be an EX in the future. Perhaps get something more to your core… If you want self-representation, try to find something about yourself that will never change.
Let’s turn the tables a bit… Do you think someone who is Christian would slap the words on their back? Buddhist? Hindu? Jew, Zik, Indigenous, etc… Probably not… What they DO tattoo on themselves are symbols that -represent- their religions or heritage. If you still want to go with “atheist” try something that symbolizes it instead.
Hope that helped.

Understood. Yes I have no problem saying that I am an atheist but getting a tattoo of it is a bit bolder. No, I don’t really care what people think about me but then again I would rather not deal with the comments. I am kind of in the middle so to speak.
Yes I have thought about getting a symbol instead of the word. The only problem is there is no set symbol for atheism because its not a religion. To me atheism is more of a statement saying I don’t believe in any higher forms or religious beliefs. But if I were to get a “symbol” for atheist it would have to be this.

This is something I feel very strongly about but maybe your right and the symbol might be the way to go. I am just not sure.
Your thoughts?
do it man
i have jesus on my arm but i am not a god squady
i just thought the picture was cool
if you like it do it and fuck everyone else
tattoed people are way cooler than those who are’nt
it’s a fact ๐
my advice is if you are having second thoughts, DO NOT DO IT!!!
cos at the end of the day if you are in two minds now and you go ahead and have it done, you might juz end up regrettin it and once it is inked, it is costly to have removed and a complete pain in the rectum to have covered over, although it could probably never be completely covered up!!!
i hope you take this advice and dont ever get ink unless you are 100% sure it is what you want!!!
xxx
YOu’re only young, dont do it is my advice, things change in life as we all do, what we like today we may not like next year or in the following years to come.
Hmmm so many more don’ts then dos. I’ve always wanted a tattoo and this thought has been very close to me for a long time. If I don’t get something like this I don’t know if Ill get one. I don’t really want to get a tattoo just for the sake of getting a tattoo. Its got to mean something to me to get it inked.
Well I will have to sleep on it.
Thank you to everyone that gave advice!
If you have any more keep it coming ๐
I like that symbol you linked us way better than the actual word.

Great, because I thought about it and I think I am going to go with the symbol on my upper back, along with a design surrounding it. Something like this: http://www.tattoosymbol.com/upload/images/heartagram.jpg . Maybe not the exact same design but close to it. And yes I’m probably going to get a heartagram on my arm when I do my sleeve because HIM fucking rules. ๐
But anyways thank you guys for the advice! I’ll let you know how it goes when I get it(probably sometime this week) and show you a pic of it!
Later for now
yeah, your HIM heartagram idea is sooooo much of a better idea than your atheist idea!!! youre choosing something that you really dig and love for your ink, which is the best way of going about it, because youll never regret it!!! but, try not following the whole flash band wagon thing as gettin ink should be unique to yourself, keep the idea but try and change it to suit you!!!

wait, confused… Are you telling me to get a heartagram instead of my atheist symbol or is that mistype. just curious lol :p
do what you FEEL is right. thats all im gonna say, cos at the end of the day its ur ink on your skin and its there for life!!! what i was trying to say was in my opinion i thought the heartagram idea was much better than the atheist one!!!
Its up to you dont keep asking people what they think you should do, because if its something you are definitely wanting, no-one elses opinion would matter!!!
