I’m 20 years old and have wanted a tattoo for atleast a few years but like many wanted to make sure what I chose I would want and be happy with. For the past 1-2 years I’ve wanted to somehow incorporate “XO” into the tattoo as Elliott Smith has been a big influence in my life but couldn’t really figure out how that would work out other then a tiny tattoo of “xo” which I don’t really want either.
About a month ago I came up with the idea of a Skull wearing a hat (not a top hat but more of a london style hat, I think they are called a tilby) with XO on the stripe of the hat. I have always been into metal music and skulls but didn’t want to get a tattoo in that genre without a way of putting some extra meaning to it to me. I’d plan on getting this on my upper left arm and would be medium sized and done in black and grey.
I’ve tried looking for more reference pictures with not so much luck. I need some advice on deciding and then explaining the expression of the skull to which ever artist I decide to go to. I’m pretty sure if I can find more/better black and grey skull tattoos it would make things much easier.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated as well.

Im sure the members here are going to be able to give ya some pretty helpful tips about your tattoo. When i wake up some more I may be able to throw out some ideas but my brain hurts right now lol. Anywho enjoy your time and very nice to meet ya 😀

This is a very quick mush of stuff to give somewhat of an idea of what I mean. I like the idea of using a dark BG and smoke to have the tattoo blend to the skin but in this example image I don’t really like the smoke covering up the skull. I’m really relying on being able to fully know what I would like and be able to explain it to an artist that has talent (cause I REALLY don’t).
I’m not sure about the smoke (or atlest how that smoke is drawn), I need some ideas though so the skull isnt just floating on the skin. I’m sure an artist would help out there also. I worked on that img a little bit more.
If I find a good tattoo shop would I be able to bring this in and get something drawn up and then have time to mull over the design? I feel like I’m on the right track but I’m not 100% sure where to go from here.
Oh yes definetly… u jsut bring it in and ask if they have design services and if so then tell them what your ideas are, give them the pic and then jsut let them do what they think is best… giving the artist free range with just some guidance will enable you to get the best sketch from them.
