This is a Buddhist Tibetan tattoo known as a Yantra or Yant. As described in wikipedia: Yantra are ‘instruments’, or more simply ‘symbols’, usually used to focus the mind. Traditionally they are used in Eastern mysticism to balance the mind or focus it on a spiritual concept. The act of wearing, drawing, or concentrating on a yantra is said to have spiritual or astrological or magical benefits.”

So basically it is a symbol of protection and meditation. It means good luck, prosperity, wealth, blessings and avoidance of harm and evil spirits.

They are based on the “Buddhist Heart,” Bodhisattvas, and the Lotus.

Hope that helped explain your friends tat.

Spoke to my friend randomly and told him what you said. He wants to get more done, with the pyramid style tattoo on the nape of the neck is there a continuation to this tattoo. And i think someone mentioned that there can be more added to this particular tattoo such as so you could continue with adding something either side which is all linked with this pyramid image.
