I have been searching the net for what peoples opinions are of having a tattoo in the workplace. I am looking for work in the financial sector and does having a tattoo really make a difference if it is in a place such as my shoulder blade which can easily be covered?
thanks for any advice and opinions.
Hello and welcome to the forum. I don’t see why a tattoo on the shoulder blade would affect the workplace. Were you planning on showing off your shoulder anytime soon? Usually the workplace doesn’t like sleeves, chest, hands, or neck. But if you can keep your ink hidden, what the workplace doesn’t know, won’t hurt em. Also if you’re super worried about ink showing, there’s makeup specially made for hiding tattoos. Look into it.
It makes a huge difference, in general people don’t employ people with hand, neck, face tattoos. You can cover the majority of the rest up. People (obviously with exception) who get tattoos in these places without a solid foundation in a career are basically conceeding themselves to a life of unemployment. It goes with the territory unfortunately and I suppose rightly so. If you have several candidates for a position and one has nasty tatts all over their face or hands and the others don’t, not many will choos the inked dude. People are beginning to get some really nice work on hands and neck now but it will take many years for the stigma of prison tatts on the hands and face to be put behind, and even then you will always get those holding the progression back by standing for everything many want to leave behind.
In history their are so many examples of people being influenced only by the minority.
God I’ve waffled on there ah!!
It depends on what you do. I’m a desinger – I could probably get away with more then say a banker could. Fireman and policeman seem to get away with a lot as do truck drivers. The Navy has a rule that you can have a much ink as you want a long as your uniform will cover it. Like I say it just depends on what you do and where you do it.
I have worked in a few places and just about all had a serious zero policy to ink.
My advice is get em where you can keep em covered – be a few mroe years before attitudes will change in work place about tattoos (sadly).

thanks for the insight. I really appreciate what you all had to say. I will be getting my tattoo in a place that is easily hidden by a regular t shirt or dress shirt.(my shoulder/back). From what i gathered, as long as it is easily hidden then i should be fine. In general, I am just a little paranoid especially with the job market as it is today. I have been cultivating my design for two years now, and since i will be graduating soon i wanted to commemorate that and do something out of the ordinary. But thank you for your help I am excited about getting my tattoo, and i will be sure to keep it covered and hidden while in the work place and around coworkers.

very interesting as one of the other topics at the moment is a fight back at my comment about a throat tattoo.
Providing it can be covered then there should be no reason why you should not get it done, it sounds like quite a nice piece if you have been designing it for 2 yrs….
its nice to see people asking about getting the placement of a tattoo before having it done, also thinking of their future employment status……
I have been worrying about the same issue – I am doing a degree atm with intention of going into teaching – and I’m desperate to get a couple of bits on my arm that have been designed for a while, but don’t want to end up having to wear long sleeves on sweaty days, so I’m holding off until I’m in the job and know what their etiquette is on visible ink (or I’m going to try and hold off, anyway, 3 years is a long time!). But as for the rest of my body – what they don’t know won’t hurt them as someone above rightly said – if it can be covered comfortably then I can’t see a problem, so I think you have nothing to worry about – and if they ask you to strip off at the interview then I’d be running a mile anyway!! 😉 Good luck mate, hope it goes well!
Outlaw – I’m with you on that topic!
thanks azure, im sure that plenty of people agree….. but they are being conservative about their feelings
I looked at that thread also. I am not as bold as that fella. I can definitely understand how that tattoo on his throat could hinder his chances of getting a job. I did have a question about the zero ink policies some one mentioned. Does that mean that if my employer found out about tattoo i would be fired? Or is a zero visable ink policy?
Zero visibility.
Fortunately it does not go that far, although I did read that the u.s.will be bringing in new stringent rules and anyone passing the metal detector must now go into a room with a special tattoo sniffing dog, life inside for a ‘tramp stamp’!

i think that might be more of the magnetic effects on the ink, the reason why i say that is because i have recently had to have an MRI scan for my spine.
But attached to the letter for the appointmen there was a questionaire to fill in, and it asks things such as do you have metal pins or implants from broken bones etc.. and the last question was “do you have any tattoo’s” .. when i enquired with them about it, they said that some inks have a high metal content, and with the scan being strong magnetic forces, it can cause discomfort and a burning sensation where the tattoo is located on the body…
so instead of subjecting a tattoo’d person to the mettal detector, they get sniffer dogs to search for drugs or weponds…

LMAO, fucking hell dude, I was taking the piss out of American airport security, I hope our fucked up bro and sisters over in America never get THAT fucked up!
Alot of tints contain lead, but I din’t think we could have that much going on.
On another note, I had an MRI, are you having the injection of ink to show any abnormalities? It is awesome, I wanted another go just for the ink loverly feeling, does make you feel you’re gunna pee yourself though.
I got no problems with my ink at my job.. i’m building ventilation systems and i’ts ok:)
All i get is positive feedback on my daemon on my neck
