For my final year project, I have chosen tattoo as my topic choice and I need some advice. I really do appreciate if anyone can spare me a few minutes of their time to answer these following questions.
1) Are you a tattoo artist?
2) What do you think of tattoo in typography?
3) What are the difficulties in tattooing fonts?
4) Any advice for people who choose to tattoo typefaces?
5) What are the more popular typefaces?
6) Is there any font catalogue in tattoo studio where clients can browse through to get an idea.
7) If the ink fades off after a certain time, is it difficult to touch up these fonts?
8) Please contribute ideas/comments to my project idea. I will design fonts that are inspired by popular tattoo themes. For example, the rose is elegant yet possess a rebellious attitude due to its thorny stalk. So the font will have these characteristics.
1. I’m a tattoo enthusiast
2. I don’t really like lettering tattoos
3. Fonts require a very steady hand, a patient client, and a creative mindset.
4. Bold dark lettering with interesting angles and shapes look the best.
5. The same type of fonts for graphic design and the like are popular for tattoos like cursive fonts, old english, “suicide note,” and bold fonts like impact.
6. When searching for an artist to do your tattoo, you’ll generally want to search for one that specializes in fonts, texts, and typography. Usually clients bring in ideas of what they want rather than looking through books. The book is there to show the artist’s potential, not to get ideas.
7. All ink fades after about 10-15 years so you’ll have to get it all reworked eventually. Typography tattoos aren’t anymore difficult than anything else. If a tattoo is poorly worked, it can be relined and shaded after about three to four weeks of healing.
8. Some other popular themes you may want to incorporate:
traditional Japanese: koi, dragon, or tiger
Rough or Hardcore look: skulls, roses, or crosses
Pinups: Generally stylized to look like magazine pinups from the early 50’s-present of beautiful women
Tribal: maori, tramp stamp, yantra
If you need anymore help lemme know.
I can’t do a 1 to 10 but can give you a quick idea of my experience.
I work with a guy who is spot on with fontattoo, I am shit. I am bad at holding a lines without overheating, I have a problem with skin stretch and over the years still can’t get it perfect, I’m open with my clients about this, hence I get most of the fluent stuff and matty gets the schematical stuff.
I’m aware that I have this problem and seldom take fonts larger than 1″ on in a piece, I’d rather pass than it not be perfect.
As most of my stuff is gangster or Jap/Chi I don’t suffer much.
I’m aware this is a very simple task but I have some form of phobia to fontattoo!!
Peace!!
