For about 10 years now I’ve been wanting a tattoo. But not actually ever decided on something that stuck. Well after speaking to a female friend of mine I seem to ahve come up with a decent idea. Though it is a bit of a monster one.
It is basically a large bird with its wings spread. Preferably an eagle. It reaches across the width of the back. With the extremeties reaching down the arms slightly.
The artwork is detailed and in the feathers you will discreetly see initials. These initials will be those of women who have made me who i am over the years. My mum, my sister, my nans, my long term girlfriends, etc.
These names will not be removed if I no longer love them because thats not the point. They are the initials of women who have changed me.
Whatcha think?
Also anyone know a good artist that could design it?
large eagle pieces are always cool but I’m not really diggin the initial idea, especially including your ex’s.
i agree, i like the eagle ideal alot but not the initials.
Go big or go home!
Im all for this idea. I really like your idea of having their initials discreetly designed into the wings. They changed your life and that is what its about.
As for designing it, find a local studio and have a chat with some of their artists. They help us realize our dreams. They have the skill that we don’t to help us realize and display our wants, wishes, and thoughts.
Hi
I have seen a tattoo that had the initials worked into the feathers – it was done by discreet shading from grey to black so that the black edges would form the initials.
As for the ex-g/f’s hmm I would say think carefully on that bit – the lad I knew with that tattoo ate a shotgun. (Not saying you will but it takes bras balls to carry so many heavy reminders 😉 ).
As for artists you actually want an artist who specialises or has a lot of exp in animal portraits – also to consider that you will likley be talking 30 hrs of work for a full backpiece.
That si some serious ink and cash so be choosy on what you want and who does it.
Good Luck.

I want to reiterate what Matthew said about an “artist who specialises or has a lot of exp in animal portraits.” I’ve seen some really crappy bird tattoos on the net and some really kick ass ones. An animal portrait is nothing like a tribal tattoo, so make sure you’ve seen an example of work they’ve done that is similar to what you want and not just other cool looking tattoos that are nothing like an animal.
Oh and think about how you will add future initials to it for girls who have an impact on your life after you finish it. Will you really want to go back into the shop and get the initials of the love of your life added after she shits on your heart and kicks you to the curb? I don’t think I would be too keen on the idea during or after the emotional healing process. You also might meet the woman you are going to marry and one drawback could be that she is not comfortable with you having initials of your exes tattooed on you.
Cheers,
-Rev
Thanks for all the feedback. I am sure I want the tattoo though I am rethinking the exs. Perhaps changing the exs to other people that have made the difference. mainly family. Parents and 3 siblings.
Whatcha think? 30 hours? I can take it. it means so much that 30 hours of pain is worth the lifetime of knowing your family has your back 😉
The idea of the eagle sounds great in my opinion, however just like what everyone else is saying i wouldnt get the initials. As for you first tatto, you might want to reconsider the size and/or get something else small somewhere else just to get a feel for it. You dont want to start a huge peice for that and halfway thru it regret starting it. I have gotten a lot of tattoos and some of them in really painful places and have at times during them thought what have i gotten myself into. Now i stick them out but like i said ive gotten numerous ones before in less painful spots before i started going big and on my torso. Just another opinion tho. Also i agree with talking to various artist that do birds and also you may want to ask them to see a photo album of theirs. I wish you the best of luck.
Is the back a notoriously painful place then?
Hi Oddone
30 hrs of ink in anybody’s book is a lot to take. Even if you do it in 10 sittings that is the equiv to getting 10 tattoos over a small period of time.
You should leave at least 2 weeks between each sitting.
As for painful it depends on your personal capacity for pain – it starts at a cat scratch upwards to a burning feeling.
You won’t be laughing – I have been advised the lower spine and kidney areas are the worst due to large cluster of nerves.
I sat through 3 all of which were around 6-8 hrs each in one sitting. The pain varied but i wasn’t chuckling on any.
The first felt like he was chewing through my leg – heavy handed.
The second was like a cat scratch to high burn – medium handed
The third was like a surgeon barely over cat scratch but after 3 hrs I took a break midway.
If you go big be prepared to sit your arse through one of the toughest challenges you will face physically and pyschologically.
Any doubts or hesitation – don’t do it. Go smaller it is no big deal.

Hey Oddone. Just the same as Sherav is saying. It all depends on the person as to what the pain will be like. I can tell you that down around my hips and kidneys sucked bad. It was all i could do to stay still. But then up towards my shoulder blade seemed like nothing at all to me. 30hrs is a lonnng time for getting inked and like i was saying before, im not trying to talk you out of it, but just want to caution you that you may be in for more than you expect.
My only issue is that its the only tattoo I know I want. And to get a smaller one to test the pain will just be getting something I dont want. Its a tough one. the Tattoo will not be going all the way down my back. The feet willl be the only things near my kidneys.
Hi Oddone
Have you considered getting a smaller version of the tattoo that you want?
I ask this so you are certain that you want big backpiece type tattoo.
Post up what you ahve done cannot wait to see it.
