Hey guys Im planning on getting my first tattoo started soon, but I have some questions.

I live in Maine and don’t know too much about the tattoo world. My first question is: How do I go about getting a tattoo designed? And the second is: Are most tattoo artists skilled enough to do bio-mechanical tattoo work? Ive been looking at the many designs and pieces and decided that I would like a sleeve of some kind done. Thanks and Im sure ill think of many more questions to ask 🙂

A good artist should be able to work with you and draw up whatever you like.

Ask around and see which artists around you like the best. Ask any friends and family with ink, hell ask anybody that you see with a nice tat who done it and who would they recommend.

Most shops these days either have a website or a myspace that they have examples of their work on. Always see examples of an artists work before letting them work on you. Do not get any flash on the wall. Get a custom piece drawn up.

If there are any conventions around you go to one and check out the artists there.

You get what you pay for. A tattoo is there forever. Laser removal is very expensive, painful, and doesn’t always work. Don’t go to an inferior shop just b/c they charge less.

true, the money is well worth it.
just go in with your idea, talk to who ever. usually some artist in the shop will specialize in certain things and work with you.
tattoo artists are some of the nicest people i rekon.

    good luck

    Hi.

A decent artist can draw pretty much anything up – but it is a bonus if you can find an artist that specialises or has a lot of exp in the style you want.

Check out portfolios and get an idea of what you want and see what inspires you.

Impressive that for your first tattoo you are going for a sleeve. With something that big you want to be sure that you like your artist and thier work before you begin the process. Do you have any friends with work that you like who you could ask for a recommendation?

    Good luck!
