I always believe the best memorial tattoo, is when you take a look at what kind of person your loved one was (likes, personality etc). Tend to lean away from only getting text. As for crosses and banners those seem to be pretty unoriginal. If you feel comfortable telling us about who your grandpa is we can give you some better help.

Ya i want something original. He served in the navy for 24 years he put everyone before him self he was like a father figure to me sense my dad was not a dad. He taught me everything i know till this day. Was funny always looked on the bright side of things. He took care of my grandma till the last day that he past away from brain cancer.

possibly located upper arm(unless you ahve skinny arms back or chest possibly) with a sun in the background to represent his positivity. Maybe some text underneath a name a quote dates what ever your into.
