Hi, I recently went to Metal Morphosis in Birmingham and had my first tattoo- a 50’s pin up girl, in black and white, on the side of my right leg near my calf. It is about 9 inches tall. I’ve taken good care of it, using the ‘tattoo healing cream they gave me, washing it, applying 3-4 times a day, generally keeping it exposed by making the most of the good weather and letting the air get to it. After 5/6 days it started to peel, and I carried on applying the cream. However noticed the image underneath was quite a bit lighter, although still in focus it seemed more of a blue/purple colour. As of now, (8 days) most of the skin has peeled and the image underneath is fully exposed. It doesn’t have any gaps, blank spots etc. However my concern is the colour of the tattoo, I have a touch up session this thursday, although surely the whole image cannot be touched up? I spoke to a friend who is inked, and he informed me that creams containing alcohol and petroleum should be avoided, as this is what has caused the lightening, and low and behold the product I have been using contains these. Although it was prescribed and sold to me by the tattooist. i’ve now switched to baby bum/nappy cream, but to ease my mind could anyone tell me Will the colour return naturally? Is it the product I have been putting on before that has caused this or is this part of the healing process? Any help greatly appreciated as I am worried!!

I’m very surprised the tattooist is touching it up so soon, it will not be fully healed, you really need to talk to him/her about the colour change also, and as for the aftercare, i cant believe he actually made you buy it, i send my clients off with bepanthen in a pottle and full aftercare instructions. Best you talk with your artist, lots of colours fade and dont stay the same as when they went into the skin.

What is the stuff called that you were using?

If it is made for tattoos, it shouldn’t hurt it, but who knows these days.

My roommate got a tat several years ago from an actual shop and they told him to use neosporin(sp?). It looks like crap now, over half of the ink is gone it real light and in some spots blotchy. I make sure to tell everybody I know to stay away from that shop.

i use bepanthem and when they peel it loses a tad of the brightness but thats just from being dry i think, as soon as i wack some moistouriser on my sh*t it all goes bright as it started when my guy did it.

    give it time.
