In relation to my previous post, the below link isn’t exactly what I was thinking of, but it was close. It would give you an idea, though I would have made certain animal changes and actually fit all of Africa in.

    http://www.witchyswikkedgraphix.com/categories/Animals/imageOpen.html?img=animals (368).jpg&page=1&items_per_page=25

As you can see, way too much detail for just my calf. And, of course, that’s a problem because I don’t want a really big tat. I was thinking of ways to adjust it, maybe with just the animals’ heads or something, but I don’t really see that as being a correction because it would still require detail. I’d want it as 3D and realistic as possible, without it turning into a blob down the road.

Part of the reason I wanted it on my calf was 1, I wanted to be able to see it, but also, 2, I wanted to do another one on the other calf that was of North America with N.A. animals in it. The significants would be that, since I’ve seen the evolutionary evidence, I’m fully convinced that we evolved in Africa and I’ve been in Africa and I absolutely loved it. Second, mixed in with all the European in my blood are also 2 Native American tribes, plus I’m from North America. The animals in both would represent the fact that I love animals, I’m in college right now to be a wildlife biologist.

So, spilling all that out, does anyone have any ideas of where I could put these or how I might be able to make adjustments without being overly simple (again, want it to look realistic)? I don’t know any tattoo artists, in my area or out, so I haven’t been able to just ask one what they think. Might go in search of one but as it stands there’s just no way to do it, so I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

    Hi

I looked over the tattoo idea and to be honest on an average sized calf you would be lucky to get 2-3 decent sized (and detailed) heads to fit on it.

A complex piece like that simply needs more room to do it justice such as the back.

The smaller the tattoo = less detail.

Have you considered simplifying the tattoo to one or two animals with some jungle scenery in the back?

Personally I would focus on a single animal and background to get the most of the space and detail if you wanted it on your calf still.

Just one or two animals wouldn’t get the point across, I don’t think. I think that would look more like that I liked that animal, period. I was thinking about less detail but I don’t know how that would work much less exactly how much I’d have to take off. There’s no point in simplifying it to the extreme just to get it to fit; then it wouldn’t even be the same tat.

I guess I’m just flat out of luck. Totally depressing.

While Matthew is right (seriously, when isn’t he?), I personally don’t think it’d look right as a tattoo period. It just wouldn’t translate well, and would look like one of those pieces where the artist had alot of ideas he wanted to get across, threw them at the page, but never quite managed to bring them together.

Actually, if that’s how it’d look as a tattoo, I guess it WOULD translate well, wouldn’t it?

I’m sorry man, sarcasm aside, I really think that it’s not a very good piece of art to begin with and that it’d look like eight kinds of shit as a tattoo anyway.

    Love. Peace. Metallica.
