I am currently in the process of getting a back tat that is a gothic/tribal representation of my family crest.
The wings are going to be black as they are mostly finished already but the center part I’m wondering if I should do it a different way.
I did up some different versions with color. I’m looking for some input on which looks best or if you think you have a better idea let me know.
K no color, thats what I was thinking also. Lots of people said shading though. I’m slightly confused on that. The wings on the left and right flank are almost filled now, they are pure black same with the star at the top. Are you guys thinking I should have a lot more negative space for the belt / spur? Solid black won’t look good?
I should have put more thought into it, I got what looked good on paper didnt think how it would look on skin.

Shading is a personal taste thing – a lot of us like it but solid colour will work as well no problem.
You can always add shadow shading behind the belt and spur or leave as a solid piece.
The main thing is get done what makes you happy not what we think – you are wearing it.

I appreciate the suggestions. I did a photo with shading to see what people think. The areas in black are already done on the tattoo so I can not really change them. I saw one post that said what ever I like is good enough.
I do like the design. I told the artist I’d like a Gothic representation of my family crest. And I wanted it to be full back. Reason for that is I have some scarring and redness so I wanted it to help cover it up.
Here is my main concern, I’m starting to think it’s too abstract. People might not be able to tell that it’s a spur with wings and that it will just look like a bunch of lines all over the place. I was thinking coloring the different aspects (Belt,Spur,Wings) might help but every combination I tried looked worse to me.
To me the shaded version doesn’t look much better either. My issue is I’m not an artist so I thought before I get this permanently done I better see if any one has any suggestions on the center piece. I like the design, I’m happy with it, it has the crest and good cover. I just want to get opinions on anyway to make it better or more recognizable. =)
You know, if it were me, I wouldn’ get the Tribal stuff, the design on the sketch looks incredible but disappears in the tribal, and I can tell that’s the feature piece or you wouldn’t want it coloured. You could always get that done and then see how you feel?
but if you were to do the whole thing… No colour.
