i go to barnes and noble every month and buy a few magazines i enjoy. inked, total tattoo, juxtapoz, and up (whenever theres a new issue). the guys at my shop buy this farely new magazine called ‘urban ink’. it caters to people of color (like muah) with tattoos, ethnic tattoo shops, etc.

now, im all for people of color and tattoos and piercings and such but who in the hell is editting this magazine?! the work that some of these artist send in is down right awful. like house-work awful. honestly, as a black tattoo artist, i am embarassed by some of this. dont get me wrong, not ALL the photos of tatts are horrible, but MOST are.

am i the only one who knows about this? cares about this?

ive bought a couple urban ink mags and noticed the same thing
i dont think i would say MOST is awful, but most of it is lower quality than you would expect to see in
    a magazine.

i was curious to see if i was the only one. i was also ticked off that all you have to do is be pretty with at least one tattoo to be in the damn magazine. lol but thats pretty much all tatt mags.

i cant comment on that particular magazine as i have never seen it upto now…. but it aint just the magazines that are doing it, i have the tattoo soup book by the london ink artist phill kyle, and in that there are some shameful pieces i must admit….

    Hi

I do sometimes get it to read although I am white I still like to see tattoos from all cultures. I think that some of them are below par but the excuse they often give is that these are ‘street edge’ tattoos whereas we call them ‘kitchen magicians’.

They are not the only peeps guilty of it many tattoo mags and books have some ropey ink but I guess there is a market for it otherwise ppl wouldn’t buy it.

I am quite new to the whole forum thing. I’ve really only been active in a chatroom setting. However, I’ve also noticed the upswing in postings of “pretty, girl next door” types with one or two pieces. It’s rather disturbing. They usually have good work, but nothing with that quiet element of wow. Of course, I could just be looking at the wrong magazines.

muah ? you mean mullah’s , cant say i seen many of them inked up and on their way to friday prayers LOL

i used to like a tattoo mag called tattoo’s for girls but many of the pics in that was not up to the same standard as skin deep and tattoo.

i meant “mwah” as in “me”. plus u mean “allah” not “mullah”. my fathers family is muslim.

anyway, i was just upset with the tattoos they choose to display. and no, not all of them suck but the ones that do suck should be labeled “unmentionables”. lol. ive picked up some other mags with crap in them but i believe urban ink takes the cake.

I know the magazine you are talking about IMHO I think its the publishing house as the same guys do a couple of other cheap cash in magazines that aren’t very good either

Out of the current US magazines right now I like the one called “Inked”

im sorry, tana. please excuse me then.

i guess the publishing company is to blame. i wanna meet the guy going through the pics sent in and question his decision making process. like wtf were you thinking, dude? i do love inked but they cater to men as they say. its like a tattoo GQ. i can appreciate the shops featured in their mags too. most of the interviews are pretty sweet as well. i did read a very interesting interview with shawn barber in juxtapoz tho. LOVE him. one thing i havent seen is a magazine with a focus on piercings. i LOVE piercings and im always searching for new techniques, utensils, or just some outta this world shit!
