I’m currently at work and had some spare time so I came up with a simple design for a tattoo I have been planning for awhile now. I just wanted to share it with you guys and see what kind of opinions I get on it. I think I’ve pretty much perfected what I want from it.
Background story: I’ve wanted a “music” tattoo for a long time now. The first idea was to get a bass clef since I’m a bassist after all but upon thinking about it a bit more I want it to be more personal. Lots of musicians/music enthusiasts have bass or treble clef tattoos. I’ve also played with the idea of getting a tattoo in respect of my native american heritage. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely a white boy (I got a beard as red as leprechaun) but there is alot of native american blood in my family tree. So I instantly thought of Kokopelli! The pueblo indian deity of Music and Fertility. Traditionally he is depicted with a flute but I think he needs a bass and most often when he is shown with animals its more along the lines of stags or reptiles but I am choosing Buffalo, these specific Buffalo add to the music aspect of the tattoo a bit more because the silhouette came from a band shirt from the band Modest Mouse whom I’ve been a fan of for as long as I’ve wanted the tattoo.
Anyway here is the picture. The Tatonkas will be on each shoulder blade whereas kokopelli will be standing along the spine and be centered slighty lower than the bison. Also, the swirly design inside kokopelli and the bass will be much better after my tattoo artist gets his hands on it. The Bison will also have similar markings in them. Oh yeah, and the bass silhouette started out as a picture of my peavey 6 string bass ๐ (I changed it to four strings to help clarify that its a bass ๐ )
Edit: And Note the Extended Thumb! He is definitely playing slap bass. Les Claypool style!
I like this, especially the Kokopelli. And not just because, as a fellow primus-loving bassist, the mention of Claypool got my attention.
Thanks! Primus sucks! Heh. I’ve only been able to see Claypool once, it was right after the Fancy Band put out Of Whales and Woes. It was like the first time he’s been in oklahoma in about a decade. It was awesome. He knew how much we have been left out so he pretty much covered every side project since primus broke up. Did oysterhead, Holy Mackeral, Frog Brigade…I don’t think he did any C2B3, A Pink Floyd Cover and the encore was on the Bassjo. He did a Bass Banjo cover of Harold of the Rocks.I loved it. It turned my brain into mush, in a good way.
to be honest i think it will look like sticker tattoos . im sure an artist could pull you together a killer design
Hi
You would possibly have to tribalise (not the exact word but closet I can think to the lower pic style) the buffalo slightly so it has the same line make up/style as kokopelli so it flows as one tattoo.
My thought was why not have music notes rising from the bass guitar and then forming the shape of the buffalo from the music.
Take Care
Matthew
Thanks for the input guys. I can see how you’d think it will be “sticker looking” but keep in mind that this is only an idea and it wont be solid colors there will be shading and such in the finished product. Instead of me going to matt (my artist) and saying “Hey man I want Kokopelli with a bass and uh…two bisons, maybe some kinda tribalesque swirly design, ect, ect…” I can show him a crude picture and say “This is the basic idea, run with it and add your own touches where you see fit and see where it goes.” And I drew it on a computer, inwhich i’ve trained myself to use a mouse right handed. Had I put that on paper it’d be done with me southpaw and be way nicer. I need to just give in and get a pen pad like I’ve been planning.
Also, I kinda like the musical note Idea. I might just see what the artist can come up with in that respect. Thanks.
Thats actually a pretty decent idea…. and apperently Sherav and i have the same thoughts lol, I was gonna say something simalar.
But yea defin talk to your artist and make sure you do research and find a decent one at that! Good luck with it!
Sorry for digging up an old thread but I didn’t want to make a new one just for a simple update.
Anyways the idea still stands but I’ve made a few changes and I am now 100% certain on this particular tattoo. It is no longer a back piece, its going to be on my left calf. The bassist Kokopelli will be on the outside of my calf and musical notes will be floating diagnally across the back of my calf and at the inside of my calf they will turn into a Bull Moose (Thanks for that Idea Sherav it was a great one). I have decided on a moose instead of bisons because its one of the few nicknames I have earned over the years and I’ve always liked that animal.
It is in queue behind 3 other tats one of which I will be getting in a week or so. I’ll post pics when it happens. Also, thanks for the input everyone.
I like your style ๐
Show us pics dude.. of all 4 :p
Yeah I’ll post pics as I get them. I don’t have any of the designs drawn out except for kokopelli or I’d post them but what I can do is decribe them. ๐ The next one is going to be in the style of those Jesus/Darwin/Evolve/Etc, etc…Fish. Only its going to be of a Coelacanth! I’m not sure where to place it yet. In my head it just screams forearm but I don’t want any visible tattoos considering I might be a teacher when all is said and done with college. I’d hate to wear long sleeves everyday. The one after that is going to be a cave drawing style muddy left hand print on the middle of my upper back and then I’m getting this on my upper right arm.
If you don’t recognize it that is taken from the journals of Charles Darwin. Its the first drawing of the evolutionary tree of life. Mine wont have any of the letters or numbers on it though, just the tree.
Then after all that I’ll finally get my artist to draw out a decent version of old Kokopelli
