Getting my first tattoo soon… I’ve been set on a design for a while now, it’s changed a little but only minimally. Recently though, I’m questioning it. And I know that if I question it even a little it’s probably not a good idea to get it, because I’m fickle and I’ll most likely end up regretting it.
This was the one I designed and threw together in Photoshop…

Which I’m now having second thoughts about. I’d rather have one that’s meaningful to me, as opposed to just being pretty.

I’ve always liked the idea of having a quote as a tattoo, and I definitely want one on my wrist… so I’m now considering having a line from my favourite poem, which does mean something to me-

Because I’m generally very tentative about taking risks, and I don’t care to be. I act like I’m forever in danger of disturbing the universe, as it were. So it’d remind me whether it’s really worth it to hang back and not take whatever risk plagues me at that moment.

Any thoughts? I’d appreciate an opinion other than my father’s– ‘you’re not getting a tattoo on your wrist’– and my mother’s, who’s perfectly okay with me getting a tattoo on my wrist, but not crazy about the idea of a quote. She’s not exactly going to stop me though, she appreciates that it’s my skin.

Thanks for reading. 🙂

There’s a few things you should address with your designs – you’d have to increase the size of either tattoo, tattoos fade and the lines gets thicker as we get older, even more so with exposure to the sun. While these designs would look fine for a couple years, they’d eventually lose shape and the text tattoo would be completely illegible.
In terms of questioning your design, I’ve questioned every tattoo I’ve got until recently. Right before the needle touches my skin, I get hit with the ‘do I really want this in my skin forever?!’ deal, right before the ‘of course I do, otherwise I wouldn’t be here!’ thought comes to mind 🙂
Now that I’m getting tattooed on a monthly basis, it’s nowhere near as big a deal as the very first tattoo I got.

Ahh yeah. That wouldn’t be good at all. Maybe I’ll rethink the placement a little so it won’t look so pretentious if I were to make it bigger. My mum already thought it was too big when I drew it on last night (but she’s silly) so I’ll have to do some thinking.
At least the sun thing won’t be much of a problem, I tend to avoid it like the plague. xD

And that’s comforting too. I’m sure there’ll always be some doubt, but I need to start taking risks anyway so I’ll just go for it when I decide.
Thanks for the info. 🙂

If you are unsure of your ideas, DON’T GET INKED.
You’re just wasting your time, you skin, your money, and the artists time.

I’m not unsure in the sense that I think I’m going to regret it, I’m mainly just paranoid about what other people will think. Which I shouldn’t be. I’m sure there’ll always be some kind of uncertainty, I mean it is a permanent mark on your skin. Especially seeing as it’s my first.
But I don’t feel so unsure that I’m seriously considering not having it done.

Theres always going to be someone who wont like your tattoo but there will always be someone who loves it too!!

You could always go for somewhere a little less obvious for your first if you think that would decrease the uncertainty.

This is true 😀

Yeah that’s a good point. I’ll need to do some rethinking 🙂

Ah, I wrote a term paper on Prufrock. I like the quote, but be sure you are ready for a commitment like a tattoo, especially in such a visible place

Awesome 😀 I came across it a while back and didn’t like it much, it just didn’t do anything for me. But I re-read it again recently and fell in love.
I shall 🙂 I’m not the type to get something like a tattoo rashly. I really do my homework with these kinds of things xD

they both look too small to me, they will blur and you will certainly regret it then

About the quote on your wrist, definitely get it bigger if you want any kind of legible script in that spot.

I made a mistake with my first tattoo and got rather small script on my wrist exactly like that, in two lines on top of each other, for my first tattoo. I also consider myself lucky though, because I got it in white ink. Thank God too, because the script is now just two rows of blobs. It is barely legible. Apparently this is because 1) script is rarely ever very legible or looks good after/as it heals when it is small, and, as the tattoo fades, the lines will blur together if the script is too small (ex: my wrist blob) 2) the skin on your wrist is very delicate, and can get over worked easily, especially if an elaborate, AND small script is being tattooed.

I really do like the idea of the quote from a poem as a tattoo, I even like the idea of it being on your wrist. But, if you’re going to do that, maybe get the quote in more than two lines and a bigger, and simpler script.

Good luck! Please post a picture after you get tattooed though, I want to be jealous of how well your wrist tattoo turned out.

It’s been said already, but I’m going to reiterate: both designs are fine, but they have to be bigger!
