Hey, I am wanting to really get a tattoo. This is going to be my first one, but I have been thinking about it for a while. What I was thinking is to incorporated my zodiac sign (how original… ha) with the Japanese style of artwork. So I want to have two koi swimming making the pisces symbol. And I want to have a little bit of the Japanese culture I love in it also. So I was thinking the koi will be swimming in water, with a couple cherry blossoms. Thats all I can really think of right now that will fit with the piece. There is so much more that I want to put into it that I don’t know will fit. I love the old architecture, the landscape, pretty much the whole culture of japan I have always been fascinated with, but I don’t know if having a building, mountain, some trees would look weird with a koi in water haha….. I tried looking online for something close, but no cigar.
So I am looking for for my own Japanese artwork to wear either a half sleeve or one that runs from my shoulder to my upper chest. I want it to me colorful just like what you would see in a picture.

As for filler it really depends on what you want to signify with the tattoo.
The koi circling would indicate the eternal cycle or struggle of life whilst cherry blossoms indicate the fragility of life as it passes and eventually dies.
Wind bars are often added as the breath of heaven or the pulse of life.
Other items you can add are temples, waterfalls, various flowers, geisha, fishermen sun, clouds or fog.

Thanks a lot for the ideas. It wouldn’t look weird having different elements that dont fit with the ocean/water? Thats my big thing. I love the landscape of japan and all the plants and trees they have there. And like I said I like the way their buildings look, but it seems like those elements wouldn’t fit with the koi and water.
yea, I am thinking either the entire side of my body (but i’ve heard that part is really sensitive. I am pretty tough, but I don’t know if I am ready for something that big for a first haha) Or like I said in my OP, a half sleeve, or the half sleeve that extends to my upper chest. Not to sure yet, like I said still brainstorming 😉

thanks! No, not crazy painful. I have 1 on my shoulder blade & another on my abdomen, and neither of those hurt at all. This one did hurt in a few places, but not horribly. I find the most pain when it’s on bone, which most of this is, but everyone’s different. Don’t alter a tat because you’re afraid of the pain– if you really want something somewhere, then go for it. It’s so short lived & not unbearable, and the excitement will get you through it. I was pretty nervous for this one– spine, hip, ribs– but I was pleasantly surprised when I got it 😀 If it’s your first, you could always go for a simpler, smaller design somewhere else like a test… But don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you think 😎
