Ok, total newbie here. I am looking to get a large black/gray back piece for almost a year now. I am freaking out about choosing the right artist and not making a mistake. I have spoken to many locals and gotten referals to guys they use, some turned out good and some not so good. I seem to be obsessing with finding the perfect match of talent, reputation, name, ext…
Am I making a bigger deal out of this than I should? How much thought, effort should I be taking/harbouring on while making this decision?
The piece I am looking to do is kind of an old school look to it, and something timeless in design, some of the artists I have meet seem really young and just didn’t have that look down I am after. There is a big convention coming up in my area, and perhaps I will just wait another month and find an artist there.
Any advices would be appreciated.
Hey, I don’t have any tattoo’s yet so I could be talking rubbish here 😛 But I think that if you want a tattoo, that will be with you for the rest of your life, then it’s worth investing as much time as you need to find the perfect artist for the job! I found google to be quite useful for me to find a studio, as I ended up finding a local alternative forum where many people with tattoo’s were discussing where they got their ink, it may also be worth going into studios and asking if they have any pictures of work they’ve done before, so you can see what kind of quality their work is at 🙂
hello and welcome to the forums. your doing the right thing by taking your time. large back pieces mean alot of comitement. you definetly want to find the right person for your piece. if you dont feel comfortable with your tattooist, your not going to be happy with your ink. What part of the world are you in. As far as being tattooed at a convention i wouldnt do it. ive been tattooed at conventions before and its kinda like a circus. But they are definitly fun. thats just my opinion though. If your going to the convention to find an artist thats different. well good luck and keep everyone posted.

The best advice I can give is that you look over artists porfolios. You may have to go into shops and look, but also you may find some on the internet. I searched for tattoo shops in my state online, and found the portfolio of my artists work. I really liked his style. Hes done both of my sleeves which are NOT done yet. Good luck

Dude…. DUUUUUUDE, this is going to be on you for the rest of your life! You are not over thinking it at all. You should wait until you have that A-FUCKING-HA moment when you find the person who can do what you want them to do. It might be the first shop you go to, it might take you a year like it did for me. When you find the right person, you know. It’s kind of like falling in love, except you pay for this service and that’s illegal in most states.
In all seriousness, wait for the person that “get’s you”. You won’t regret waiting.
