Hey everyone
I’m getting a portrait of my daughter done on my back at the end of May. Have researched my artists and chosen one. I originally wanted it done in black and grey but the guy who is doing it has persuaded me to go for colour. He’s reduced his hourly rate and is only charging me for 3 hours work, not the 5-6 hours he thinks it will take. He says he really wants to do the portrait because its a fun picture, rather than the normal type of portrait pictures he does. Great for me!
However, I’m a little nervous about the colour portrait.
So, what I’m really asking is your thoughts on colour portraits. Does anyone have one and what are your thoughts. Should I have stuck to my guns with the black and grey.
Thanks for your input.
Hmmm….. tough question….
How firmly do you want a black and grey? that would be a good place to start. I personally think that if your artist is really good in the B&G space then you you stay there. If he’s better at color-and you like him enough to change your idea- then maybe you should consider switching.
In my opinion, I think portraits look better in black and grey. You have to make sure you pick a black and grey artist though.
As far as the pricing goes, figure out what you want first and then worry about the price. This will be with you forever so the price will be forgotten about in a year but you will have the tattoo for a very long time. Think about it this way…. if he was going to do it for free but you would have to get Chewbacca instead of your daughter, would you do it? it’s extreme, but my point is still valid.
Stick to your guns and get what you want.
Thanks for your reply.
I’d already decided this was the guy who I wanted to do the tattoo for me, cost didnt come into that. It was just a nice surprise when we talked money afterward.
I’ve seen some awesome colour portraits. But I’ve seen some shitty ones too. Although, the same can be said for black and grey!
He’s the guy who to a certain degree knows best and I need to trust his judgement. He tells me it will look awesome in colour and I do believe him. I think I’m just hesitant because I went in with something slightly different in mind!
vic i agree with gsouder. Man its your ink and you have to live with it for the rest of your life. the tattooist may not ever see your piece ever again. I do understand wanting to trust your tattooist artistic point of view though. My opinion is go with what you want. Who is the artist thats doing it. I always ask cause i love to check out portfolios online if they are available. well good luck and keep us updated.

really its up to you , what makes the image of your daughter jump out as a colour portrait so much ?
is she holding something , got real beautiful coloured eyes etc
it would look sweet in colour actually 🙂
well either way , but i can see why your artist wants to go colour
