I have been thinking about it for the last few years, and Ive decided I want to go ahead with it. However, I dont want to spend TOO much money on it. (Dont want to cheap out, just dont want to go overboard)
I figure detail will be the biggest expense. Anything else that will drive the cost up? Is it safe to assume text would be much cheaper, than a picture?

hello and welcome to the forums. one thing to remember, when it comes to tattoos, you get what you pay for. what did you have in mind as far as tattoo wise.

Well, I have lots of ideas. For my first, I was thinking some kind of text.
“. . . nothing contributes so much to tranquillize the mind as a steady purpose . . .”
(Marry Shelly, Frankenstein)
I am a huge classic horror fan (mainly 30’s and 40’s) so pretty much all my ideas have to do with horror.

Tattoo pricing is a very basic formula

Time+talent= money

Hi and welcome.

The thing you have to think about is that the tattoo is a permanent decision for life and can only be removed at huge cost and a lot of pain.

Always strive to get the best ink possible (even a simple text one). If you cannot afford the decent artist you want do not compromise wait and save up.

Yeah, the idea is, I dont want to spend A LOT of money, but I want something done right…so Im meeting half way and starting with text. I have lots of ideas…thinking about maybe eventually making it a sleeve of text? What does everyone think of that?

The first, is either the first quote, or…
“all work and no play makes jack a dull boy” Done in a “typewriter” kind of font, with a couple letters crooked.

Hey

I wouldnt advise a full sleeve of text as though someone was using your arm as a piece of paper, personally. But what I have seen is a guy who has random phrases randomly scattered across an arm. it isnt a sleeve, and it doesnt make a coherent whole, but I think it would look better than just writing coming down you arm.

But I get your ideas – I love quote tattoos.

On a matter of personal taste, I would say if you are choosing Frankenstein because of the horror rather than a particular affection for that quotation, I think the novel has a wealth of better quotations – there’s some truly beautiful philosophy in there, particularly from the creature. I’d love to get on to a discussion of where the ‘horror’ comes from in the novel, cos I think it’s not from the creature, but hey, this is a discussion about the tattoo so I’ll shush 🙂

If you can’t afford exactly what you want, wait, save-up, and go to a reputable artist. Don’t get tattooed for the sake of getting tattooed. Re-read your post and tell us how you would respond.

Nuff said!

OK…basically, out of the ideas Ive had over the years, I want to start with a quote, since its my first, I figure Ill start simple.
The Frankenstein quote, was chosen partially because I love the story, and movie, and partially because I just like that quote, for its realism. (If you focus on one thing enough, you dont think about anything else…)

So like I said, I want to start out simple for now. Then add some other ideas maybe. (Zombie pin up, clown, and some kind of irish themed tattoo, for my family’s irish background)

I feel like we are all being negative on your idea. I personally like the idea but I too object to you doing it cheap and doing it in parts. The problem with doing the text now and adding the rest later is that you are going to have two different tattoos from two different times. The cohesion won’t be there and you will have to compromise the integrity of the composition to suite the spacing around the pre existing tattoo.

Basically, you will have to work around the tattoo later on vs planning it out at the same time.

You don’t have to listen to anyone but yourself. If you think this is the right way to do it, go for it. Don’t let a bunch of internet strangers tell you what to do. However, if you want a nice, clean, cohesive tattoo that is nice looking and really works save your money and get the sleeve done all at once.

I can certainly see your point.

If you want something unique to you, make it about what your into – horror sleeves can look great – between you and the tattoist you’ve got to decide size placement colour etc – and give the artist a credit for knowing what will work and what won’t.

An aside is that you’ve got to spend the money – if your thinking about multiple tatts you should really get the artist in to work something out between you – nothing looks sweeter than a well thought out piece.

And make sure you spend enough time and money to get it done right.
