Hey all, just joined in order to ask this question: what do you think of having a negative/pessimistic/sad sentiment tattooed on your body? I’m not asking for reassurance, just curious how many of you could see yourselves doing it if you had reason.

An example that made me wonder about this is a quote from a Velvet Underground song that I love: “Sunday morning and I’m falling, I got a feeling I don’t want to know.” It’s a really beautiful and mournful moment in the song where the reverb kicks in and the meaning of the song is thrown into sharp relief. But it’s not your traditional, optimistic ‘motto of my life’ shit that you see plastered all over people these days.

What do you think?

Well if it means something to you, then get it done!

Who cares if anyone else would get it done on them. If you want it done, get it done!

Everybody is different and what they feel is meaningful to them probably isn’t going to be meaningful to any other person. That is the joy of being able to get tattoos is that it is symbolic to the individual and nobody else can have the same piece of art.

Personally, would I ever get anything sad or negative on my body. In one word, NO! That is me personally though, because I don’t live my life dwelling on the negative. I prefer to focus on the good and the upbeat parts of life. I try to find something good out of the sad or negative parts of life.

Well, some of the images in my future tats are perhaps depressing and negative, but they don’t have depressing or negative meanings for me.

But my ex (who suffers from depression) has some 6 tattoos on her and the only one she really regrets is the depressing text one. It serves as a reminder of bad times that she’d rather forget, now that she’s getting better. I regret the rest of them, though, because they’re cheap (not scratcher, but just cheap) work and could have been better… but that’s neither here nor there 😀

So no, based on her experience I definitely would advise against such tattoos.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I just re-read my original post and thought I should clarify it a bit. I probably shouldn’t have used the word ‘shit’, coz I don’t mean to criticise anyone’s positive quote/image to live life by. Mine belongs in that category.

Also, I’m not actually planning anything along these lines. It just made me think, and I wondered if there were any stories like your ex’s, ArniVidar, or opinions like yours, SRR. Thanks again for those.

I guess it’s a fine line between quotes/images of a hard times but with inspirational meaning to the owner (like mine) and something that just reminds the owner of the hard times without any positive message. There is plenty of art, literature and music that is just sad but beautiful, though. I guess ‘poignant’ is what I’m thinking of.
