Hi,
I have ideas for tattoos but only pictures i have thought up, they are not on paper, i have looked for designs and pictures in books and the internet but nothing i am not happy enough with anything to have done as a tattoo on me.
Everything i have got so far has come from already existing designs from a tattoo studio or the internet, one was just a picture but it was very very basic in design.
I am thinking about asking my brother, who is good at art, to try put my ideas on to paper but hes an incredibly busy man and lives a hell of a long way away so its not ideal, i couldnt possibly try draw it myself because im probably the shittest drawer i have ever known.
So how could i get these ideas on to paper for the tattooist to work with? And just how little on paper can a tattooist be given to work with to create a design for me? Will a tattooist even offer assistance as some i have spoken to before just want you to come in with exactly the image id want and thats it.
Plain and simple pick your artist, a real good one for that matter and let him know whats on your mind.
After all they are artists and should be able to knock it out of the park. Do a good amount of research for your artist as well.
Whatever artists wanted you to have the design are not worth going to, no professional artist will turn down doing a custom piece for you.
Cheers,
Marcus
This is what your tattoo artist is for.
Like they said above, it’s all about doing your research and finding the right artist for the style of tattoo you’re thinking of. You can even pitch your ideas to a few and guage their reaction and see who’s really into it. And if they’re unwilling or incapable of drawing something up, chances are you’ll want to go to someone else anyway. One great artist I know of that primarily works directly from client reference is Shane O’Neill.
And to add to what the others have said, you will simply bring your artist all your reference material when you sit with him to consult. “I want some of this, with a dash of this, looking something like this” and so forth. He’ll use that source material (and no doubt much of his own source material as well) to draw something up for you. You pay him for that work, and if you like it you get it tattooed. If you don’t like it, you move on.
