I’ve been thinking about getting some sleeves done but I have no idea what to get and was wondering how you guys decided what to get.
I have some vague ideas of what I want but I can’t draw so my ideas don’t go very far!
Thanks guys!
I don’t have a sleeve, but I just went with my passion ~ something I really love and will never stop loving, for my first tattoo. My next tattoo, which I am currently working on with my artist, is going to be of something I’ve always liked with some symbolism mixed in that means something to me personally. I think if you choose something you’ve thought about and really like, you can’t go wrong! Just don’t rush into it. Really think it over. I’m sure you will receive lots of advice here! I could say lots more, but I’m in a hurry now! 🙂
Thanks for the reply. I’ve already got 2 tattoos that have meaning for me and I’m not sure if I should develop on that or do something else. Thanks though
Meaning shmeaning just get whatever pops into your head.
i’ve never been one to choose something off a wall or get something random just coz it looks pretty, i prefer them to have some meaning to my life. I have a heart on my wrist (i wear my heart on my sleeve, corny but i love it) some script in spanish on my ribs about my family, and two sparrows on my hips, a girl and a boy because like swallows, my husband and i are mated for life and we will always return to each other no matter how far we may get separated. my next project is going to be a rainforest scene in a lower back piece with some photorealist blue morpho butterflies. Blue morpho butterflies are very special and very rare and beautiful and they mean something to me, it is also something that i have wanted since i was 13 🙂 i would think of things that are special to you and find a way to symbolise that through your artwork, even if that passion is disney princesses or something lol good luck and let us know what you come up with.
p.s. you dont need to be able to draw, i think the best tattoos are the ones where you have a rough idea of the elements you want to include and then you let the artist have free reign, that way its a lovely surprise because their composition (if you get a really good artist) will always be better than yours 🙂 xxx
I agree. Keep the meaningful stuff to smaller, individual pieces and not a sleeve. For a random sleeve, I think you should start with an idea for a general style and theme…such as japanese, traditional, etc. and color or black and grey. From there you can start coming up with a few elements you’d like to include, start researching artists and that’s how it should start. There’s a million sleeve pics you can look at to give you a general starting point regarding style depending on what catches your eye.
I agree with kittykat on this one. I don’t see the point on getting a tattoo if it doesn’t mean anything and you just thought it looked pretty at the time. I don’t want to be stuck with something that I may end up not liking.
I had the idea of an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other shoulder (not cheesy corny ones but good ones) with each arm representingg the good and the bad sides of me and my life. What do you think?

Stop watching so much reality tattoo tv. The point of getting a meaningless tattoo is an appreciation of the artform…nothing more, nothing less. Just because the tattoo doesn’t have some deep, miami ink like drama story behind it doesn’t mean you will end up regretting it. In my opinion it’s more than acceptable to get tattoos just because you like the way they look.
yes exactly, in your opinion, but even when looking at other mediums of art i find i appreciate and love it all the more if i have a connection with it in some way. it doesnt have anything to do with miami ink etc, i just dont want someone scribbling all over my body with something that they think will look cool just for me to go “oh yeh that looks pretty” but actually have no connection with it whatsoever. if its gonna be on my body forever i want to have some input! lol
I’ve never watched any tattoo reality shows so I have no idea what you’re on about.
Again, I agree with Kittykat. It’s going to be on my body for the rest of my life and I want to be able to look at it and love it rather than look at it and think it’s ok.
Maybe it’s just us being women but I think tattoos should be something you really want rather than something you get for the sake of it.

I just got a nice gypsy tattoo on my leg, it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time. There is no meaning besides I love the style and the image and to me it’s not any less beautiful just because there is no deep meaning to it. My first few tattoos do have meaning, from there the rest don’t and won’t but they won’t mean any less to me. I don’t know, maybe you’re right that it is a female thing but to me beautiful art is beautiful art whether there is a personal connection or not. I am now at the stage where probably every tatttoo I get from here on out I will get for the aesthetics and not the meaning and they will all be equally significant and beautiful.
That’s exactly what I’m trying to say. Not every tattoo has to have a deep and powderful meaning behind it as long as it means something to you. The latest one you got Adler, it means something to you whatever way you look at it. Mine at the moment don’t have a deep meaning but they symbolise something to me.
