Figured I’d get opinions on both questions at once. I’m looking to redo a tattoo and am hoping to consult a few artists, only issue is I don’t know/can’t find the top cover-up artists around here (Oregon or nearby). I know some of the top artists, but sure if that means they’re also great at cover-ups? Just some names would be great and I can go from there.

As for the Japanese tattoo, I’m searching for an artist to do a half sleeve. The only two I know are Jeff Gogue, and Aaron Bell in Seattle. The downside to Gogue is that he’s booked two years out and currently not taking new clients.. Any other greats around here or Cali?

No, definitely not. Sorry I can’t help with any names out west.

What are u trying to cover up? Aaron bell is great i have a piece from him and im sure he is capable of a coerup.

edit: didnt realize this was 2 part question. have you looked in to james kern for the coverup? also how far down cali are you willing to travel? tons of great artists in southern cali for japanese work, and coverups.

James Kern at no hope no fear pops into mind. You may also try going to the upcoming Portland tattoo Expo

I posted a previous thread about cover up ideas on it. Basically, this is my only “artistic” tattoo, but it didn’t turn out anything like I would’ve imagined and have been disappointed with it ever since.

Already contacted Kern a few weeks ago, haven’t heard back yet. But yeah, sounds like Aaron Bell can do amazing stuff. Sounds I may have to lighten my tattoo, based on the thread I posted in.

Just to clarify, I just want to redo it, not cover with something else. Although if the possibility came up to redo the eagle somehow and the whole thing, I could go for that.

interesting, i never knew that about the cover ups. i know a lot of the “top tier” artists dont like doing re-works of other artists but i thought coverups he would do.

Yeah seems to be a common theme. Maybe up and coming artists are the way to go.

i dont know if this is your style or not, but damon conklin in seattle might be worth a shot.

appreciate the idea, but I already checked him out and he seems a little too painterly for me. I think I’m just gonna sit on this one awhile and not actively pursue getting it fixed up. Plus, I”m considering lightening it with laser removal, so I’m currently looking into that. I think that will open up many more options for what I can do with it.

Maybe try Derek Noble

Or hit up the Portland expo

Yeah I think I might hit the expo. I looked at most of the artists portfolios and it looked like Russ Abbott and Carl Grace stuck out to me ( I tend to gravitate towards black and gray realism (although Abbott isn’t). Never been to one, so it’d probably be a fun experience either way.

Yeah, I never thought of adding color to it, but I bet he’d do it nicely. As I mentioned, never been to a convention..do you try and book an appt with them there? or is it first come first serve and hope they want to do your tattoo?

find a few artists you like and start contacting them before the convention. as early as possible. there are instances where you can just show up and book an appointment but that is usually rare.
