I sar an image online of a person with a pikachu tattoo that was pixelated, like it appears in Pokemon Yellow.
It looks pretty small: Video Game Tattoos – Yellow Version – UGO.com
Anyway my tattooist said to do something similar and keep the detail it would be the size of, say, 5 square inches, to keep the detail. Bogus?
The thing about pixelated tattoos, is that contrary to what some might think, in my opinion if they are to look good they need to be EXTREMELY well done. There is no such thing as a straight line in tattooing, and doing something that’s basically built of of extremely equal-spaced crossed straight lines therefore needs to be spot on if it’s not to look bad.
I’m not sure of exactly 5×5″, but I’d definitely want it large enough on me so that every square would keep clean and.. square.. for a very long time.
Horse shit. find a better tattooist
i will be getting some work from ben on my toe thumb soon! i hope…

There’s not a single straight line in that tattoo ๐
I wasn’t saying that a small tattoo couldn’t be done well. I just think that in order for 8-bit tattoos to be done well, they need to made large enough that very little fading and bleeding happens. Pixels are 100% square, 100% solid, 100% unicolor pieces with a very limited color range. There’s far less room for screwing up there than in realism tattoos with all sorts of shading and stuff where you can blend one color into another.
exactly what i got that is!
8-bit pokemon of Pikachu and ash! ๐
Right after it was done ..
3 Weeks later
My artist I go to all the time just did something similar using Sonic the Hedgehog. Turned out really cool in my opinion. Of course this isn’t my tattoo but either way I thought i’d share it!

That’s not the way it works. If you don’t want honest opinions then stick with showing it to your mom.
I agree with Zorba and buttwheat. I am still new to tattoos myself.
I was proud of my first tattoos. My friends liked them to. Of course they were my friends, the tattoos were here to stay, why bad mouth them?
Then I stumbled onto this forum. People here (some assholes, they know who they are) yielded a very honest no-holds-barred opinion.
Guess what? I discovered that I could, and did, do better. I was prepared to continue dealing with the first shop I went to.
I’ve discovered that that shop was not nearly as professional as they should be. (I’m 56 years old and that shop asked for a deposit for artwork. No problem for me, deposit $50.00 for a $200.00 job. Later, 18 year old girl, back piece for $800.00 NO deposit, when tattoo is done girl cries saying she has NO money. Now in court system)
I’m now having work done by an artist that really knows his shit. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one but I sure wouldn’t want to go through life without my asshole, it serves a very importent purpose.
Listen to the critics and learn from them.
Check my posts over the last several months. I learned a hell of a lot. As work on me progresses I’ll be posting pictures. When it’s all
done if this bunch doesn’t like it, they can ALL jump up my ass!
If you’re happy with your tattoos that is what really matters.
