Now that my abdominal tattoo has healed well, I’m again feeling the itch to get another tattoo. I’ve kicked around some ideas here and I have tattoos that I know I want in the future: A heart with tree roots, a Sak Yant style tiger, a Maneki Neko that looks like my cat, a stylized “DNR” chest piece (when I’m well-established in my career.
It will have to be a little while since I have some certifications and major clinical hours ahead where an open wound would be a no-no. But I’m entertaining maybe doing it in July or August as a little reward for myself. Committing to one idea is the challenge, and I was wondering what to pick next. My pictures of my tattoos (save my little cherry blossom from my dumb undergrad days past, long faded and crying for a touch-up) are all in my album… I was thinking perhaps I should get something that “goes with” the others.
The next tattoo will likely be placed on my left side/hip, or on my right side – I’m not ready to commit to something like a back piece yet. Here are the ideas I’m kicking around for a side tattoo:
1) a Sak Yant style tiger
I’m flexible about the style, but I really like how Sak Yant tigers look in the face and would like at least some influence in the face and body. There’s something very beautiful about it to me, and I love the simplicity. Can’t have real Sak Yant anyway, so why not get a Western rip-off, I figure?
2) a Black Forest inspired forest scene
Something like this would be lovely. I love the simplicity in this particular tattoo, and you see this in forest scenes on plates and wine glasses and steins from the Black Forest – We have stuff like this from my mother’s family in my parents’ home, and like the Sak Yant, I love the simplicity and cleanliness in the art from that part of the world. I wouldn’t mind a little forest scene with a bear or stag or wolf or something eventually, or even something like the cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest.
and lastly
3) the heart with tree roots
A Rilke inspired thing I made a thread about… You guys posted some great art and suggestions, and I think I really want an anatomically correct heart with tree roots, and let a quality artist make a piece to remember beyond that. This is a piece I definitely want and that could be so cool, but this is one that I think would be a lot of sessions and I really want help on deciding upon an artist, maybe seek someone who specializes in anatomical type stuff and likes doing freaky art projects, etc. This would probably take months of decisions and really seeking out the right artist. (You’d have to put up with me more.)
These are all tattoos I really want and have considered for a long time. (Remember how I thought I wanted a Black Forest piece on my belly? And I ended up getting the Indian inspired piece I wanted there… I’m wishy-washy.) So I’m asking you guys: What seems the most cohesive for my next choice? What would you do next if it was your bod? (I’ll sock you if you say, “HIT THE GYM!”) I’m having trouble settling on an idea to pursue. And I swear this will be my last tattoo for the year, so I have to make it a cool one. 😉
ou
I just got home from work. I have a Gin and Tonic at my side. I wasn’t planning on thinking anymore tonight. Damn you GCL!
I’ll be back.
Don’t make me get the thinking whip out, Sam!
And, BW, I love that! Very Black Forest-y.I do love wolves and foxes… Damn you for adding more things into the mix! You’re nothing but trouble!
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but whips and chains excite me. (anonymous)
That’s buttwheat’s fox idea.
When I think of the “Black Forrest” I think Cuckoo Clock! (my wife thinks chocolate cake)
In cartoons the cuckoo comes way out of the clock carrying things like bowling balls, bombs, and knives. (Tom & Jerry)
Imagine a cuckoo clock with it’s pendulum, chains, and pine cone weights wrapping around your leg while the ornery cuckoo is tantalized by your exquisite beauty.
I’m not sure what the facial expressions of a tantalized cuckoo look like, but that’s up to your tattoo artist.
Please post pictures.
If your definitely going with one of the ones you posted, I like the tiger minus the err is that writing lol?
As for the hip, like hip tattoos to be big so I will be bias and say do it somewhere else 🙂
I think of the cuckoos, too, Sam, though I like the cake. (It’s not good for my behind, though.) You’ve never seen me – I might be a real dog. 😉
Peter, that’s Thai script. I love Thai style tigers, and since I’m doing some clinical work in GA, I’m seriously considering at the end of it in July, getting a tattoo in Atlanta on my way back home… Which would mean one sitting. Jerry recommended some great shops when I asked.
I think something nice and simple would be a refreshing change.

Judging by what you appear to be like on the inside, I’d take a gamble on the outside.
tony mancia, vince villalvazo, kelly dotty, russ abbott are all top top artists in GA.

Names are good! Now I just need to get someone to agree to slip me after I have a concrete idea and I’m golden. 🙂

Sam, that’s really kind. Thank you. You’re a good person.
Assuming all goes well and I get through this mess with flying colors, I really plan on a tattoo, and I can think of no better way to celebrate starting a new chapter. (Of course, this is just another leg on the journey.) Since it’s going to be a one session deal in another state, I may go with something less complex than anatomical work based on the artists you guys and Jerry recommended since they’re so thorough, if that makes sense.
ETA: In running my mouth, I’m getting a clearer vision of what I want. I’m wondering if I can’t get a piece on the hip that has the roundness of the little forest scene I posted, but with some Thai style influence with a tiger and in one color. I just really like that shape and style on that part of the body. Sort of a way of making two tattoo ideas into one. I think the right artist could do a lovely job with my half-ass idea.
