I’m Amanda. I haven’t yet gotten my first tattoo, but I’m going on the 23rd of this month to get it. I’m nervous and excited, and hoping to find some advice and experience here. (:

Welcome and I am glad you came here before you vet your first tattoo.

Who is your artist going to be, link to their portfolio? We could save you a headache in the future 🙂

Here’s a link to my artist’s portfolio: Flesh Tattoo Company :: Fallston, Maryland 21047
I chose her based on several factors, but one of the biggest for me was how beautifully she did my friend’s second tattoo.

    Welcome to the forum!

Make sure you really like the design before the needle starts working!

Their site says nothing about aftercare. Please don’t let them use A &D ointment when they tattoo you!

I definitely love my design, though she’s tweaking it. I’ll make sure to let her know if there’s anything I don’t like about it before I let her put it on me forever.

Most of the information I have from them is from actually going in, but she did tell me that she’ll give me aftercare instructions after the tattoo. What should the aftercare be like?

She will but this is what I follow with excellent results. I have had some real bad healing before I tried this.

    Healing for large sessions:

Bandage your tattoo with saran/plastic wrap allowing no air to get to the tattoo for the first 72 hours. Within those 72 hours remove the wrap every 4 hours and wash thoroughly with non-scented anti-bacterial soap. Re-apply wrap with new saran/plastic wrap. Repeat process for remainder of 72 hours. After 72 hours remove the wrap leaving the tattoo exposed and use an intensive care FRAGRANCE-FREE dry skin lotion such as Lubriderm. Apply lightly as needed and for as long as needed.

There is no such thing as the perfect aftercare method. Everyone has different opinions and different results using any number of methods.
I personally don’t mind artists using a petroleum based product during the tattoo at all, I’ve even used A&D during healing with excellent results. It depends on quite a few factors 🙂
The method buttwheat uses worked horribly on me, worst healing experience ever. Just stay away from products with perfume, alcohol etc, keep the tattoo clean, but don’t scrub it or anything. Use an ointment/lotion on it, Lubiderm, bephanten, cocoa butter, A&D, and a ton of other products work just fine for this purpose, depends on your skin, how you heal, etc. If you get a reaction, switch.
