This is just a suggestion. I created a forum using SMF and I set the forum to require administrator approval before their profile is approved. On SMF forums the administrator gets the ip address for everyone who joins. Use Dogpile as a search engine and search each ip address. If it is a spammer the ip address will show up on spambot. You can then deny them. 9 out of 10 people who tried to join my site were spammers. I denied them on the spot, and blocked the ip address.
I don’t really remember what it was like to register, but can’t they put a CAPTCHA in place [if there isn’t already one… lol, damn concussions!!!!]
well im really getting bored of spammers 😡
oh and did everyone else get 2 profile messages yesterday about chinese tattoo kits
i deleted all the chinese tattoo kits visitor messages.
Just to let everyone know what we are doing to combat spammers.
1. everyone who joins has to complete a captcha image and also answer a question such as “enter blubber into the box below” or something similar so that they can proceed to the next step of registration.
They also have to click through the link in an email to activate (double opt in)
If they complete the registration in to short a time (indication of a bot doing the registration) it fails
2. there is a group of webmasters at http://www.stopforumspam.com/ who all provide details of spammers and they are combined into a large database.
Every person who tries to register is filtered against that database by ip address username email address etc etc and the registration will fail if there are any matches to the 445000 spammer details in that db.
3. i have placed overall bans on hundreds of domains for emails etc so no one using those well kjnown spammer domains can register at all they would have to use a gmail or hotmail account instead.
4. i do sift through the remaining new registrrations for names like “Isellviagraandimatwat” when they arrive at my email inbox
maybe a year or two ago when we had a few registrations we may have been able to moderate every new user but that just cant happen with the amount we now get.
but for example so far today we have had
74 attempted registrations
8 actual registrations
the spam over the past few days is all from different people. or one person who changes their ip address using a proxy or simnilar every time.
You cant stop all the spammers because some of them work manually. what we can stop is all the automated registration and spamming bots.
believe me if i turned all the prevention off you would see a real spammy forum. at the moment we can manage with the ones which are here.
End of essay. 😎
