I’m an older guy who likes early Mettalica. I like the heavy, fast-paced bass in the death metal and thrash metal I hear today, but the screaming and (to me) unintelligible singers really annoy me. I find myself thinking, “Shut up and play yer guitar!” Is there a band that does a lot of hard-rockin’ instrumentals? Thanks!

Apocolyptica (im sure that is so spelled wrong) but it is something my hubby likes and from the sound of it you have pretty similar taste in music 🙂 hope you like!

Instrumentally speaking I would steer you toward Dream Theater. Check out their website for some of their song books.

The band you want to check out is called Dream Theater. If Metallica, Rush, Pantera, and maybe Iron Maiden all had their way with the members of Yes, then Dream Theater would be their mutant offspring. Hard stuff, lots of long instrumental breaks, a singer that can actually sing (as opposed to merely scream, though he’s capable of that, too!).

They have some of the most talented musicians assembled under one name. They’ve also been around about 20 years, so there’s LOTS of material to check out. Their most recent CD, “Systematic Chaos” is actually quite heavy. My source link goes to YouTube, where you can see the studio video of them recording a song called “The Dark Eternal Night.”

Enjoy. And if you don’t like them, well… you probably don’t love yourself.
