Turtles can be very shy, and its good you have somewhere for them to hide if they feel they need too. You will find that your turtle can be more active then you know……try to view your tank from where the turtle cant see you…..you may even find it basking if you have a heat lamp. Its the turtles natural instinct to be weary of predators and larger animals. It will get use to you eventually.
