I was watching a film and I wondered what percentage of Americans go to college/university as in leaving home and doing a degree in another city/state.
do you call university ‘college’ or is this something I have got wrong?
In england uni is university
college is college, 2 different things.
Generally how old are people when they leave home for study, and how far do they go for college/university??
Any examples?? Just interested
yes, we “go off to college”, though the actual place we go to is usually referred to as a university. we would never say that we “go to university”, but we would say “I go to the University of South Carolina” or “I go to Yale University”. universities are kind of a collection of colleges. My university has a college of music, college of business, college of arts and sciences, etc.
People go to college after high school. (The schooling system is as follows- with approximate ages:
Pre-school (4 year olds)
Kindergarten (5 year olds)
Elementary school: 1st grade through 5th grade (6 year-10 year olds)
Middle school: 6th, 7th, and 8th grades (11-13 year olds)
High school: 9th-12th grade, though referred to as Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior (14- 17 year olds)
College: usually four or five years (five years has recently become somewhat popular) Freshman, Sophomore, Pre-Junior (if in a five year program), Junior, Senior– (most people are 18 or 19 when they begin college)
I would say that the majority of people stay in the same state for college because it is cheaper. Tuition is different for people who live “in-state” and “out of state”. Sometimes it is double or more for those who live out of state. In my high school’s graduating class, I’d say that less than 15% of the people went out of state for college.
A college is an institution that offers undergrad degrees only, a University combines both Undergrad and Graduate degrees. A University often has multiple colleges within the University, like the college of liberal studies, the college of education and the college of Engineering.
The terms, although different, are often used interchangeably in the States. Most people just say they are going to college, but they are attending the University of ___________.
Most kids go right after high school, so around 18. Most kids go in state because out-of-state tuition is significantly higher.
Most just call it college, even if it is a university. Or we’ll call it by its initials (MIT, UVA, etc.) Calling it “uni” or “university” seems to be a U.K. thing.
I don’t know percentages that go to college in the U.S., but I think the percentage that goes out of state is probably a lot lower than films would make you think. Almost everyone I graduated with went to a school in this state or in a state close by.
Most people are 18 when they go to college, right after graduation from high school. People who say they are taking “a year off” don’t seem to go back at all.
Some colleges are called college, some universities are university. I think the University means there are graduate degrees and colleges only have bachelor or associates. Traditionally people are 17 or 18 when they go off to college if they finished high school without failing. I actually stayed at home most of my college years, I did have 1 year in the dorms on campus. That was a pretty cool experience.
yes…the rich ones…the poor ones…joining the local gang…
college is 2 years that offers like AA or AS or vocational programs while universities offer B.A and graduate degrees and they have professional college like college of medicine, college if law.
anyway not a lot of people go to universities out of state because out of state tuition is way too much its almost double. Now a days a lot of people go to community colleges locally so that they can stay home and save money. While others go to universites mostly in the same state. if they go to university then kids move out that 18 right after high school but come back for vacation and all but if they decide to go to community college and get AA before transferring to a 4 year university then they generally stay with parents however thats not always the case. Some times they just move out because they don’t want to live with parents.
