Back in ancient times it started.
I found this out visiting Isreal.
Back then they would bury the person above ground, in a cement vault.
Being such, they did not want the top to be toppled over, so they would secure it by this method.
Many graves in the old city are still above ground.
This also signified that someone visited the grave.
Thus this is how the term tombstone came into being.
The practice is still being done now.
