I was walking around the Cemetary today where my Dad is buried, and i noticed that on alot of the gravestones there were rocks on the top of them. Why? does it signify something?

I thought maybe it sort of showed howmany people had visited that persons grave, maybe not…

    Yes, it does.
Back in ancient times it started.
I found this out visiting Isreal.
Back then they would bury the person above ground, in a cement vault.
Being such, they did not want the top to be toppled over, so they would secure it by this method.
Many graves in the old city are still above ground.
This also signified that someone visited the grave.
Thus this is how the term tombstone came into being.
The practice is still being done now.

It is a Jewish tradition to place a stone on the grave or grave marker of someone they’ve visited. It’s a very old tradition that dates back thousands of years.
