Easy, try finding some older stuff that influenced the modern stuff.
In particular I would recommend trying the following:
Pop Will Eat Itself – Any
Senser – Stacked Up album
Curve – Cuckoo
Rage Against the Machine – Early stuff
Ned’s Atomic Dustbin – God Fodder album
Levellers – Levelling the land
Nine Inch Nails – Pretty hate machine album or Broken EP
All these will give you some clue as to the origins of what is considered indie these days. Classic tunes from my youth!
