Hey all, first time posting here. Been looking for a community like this, glad I stumbled onto it.

Anyway, I’m 23 and finally want to get my first tattoo. I find a lot of tattoos that I see are overly tacky, but every once in a while, I find someone who has a great tattoo. Basically, I wanted to look up a forum is because being that this is my first tattoo, I don’t want to rush into this and come out with something that I’m just going to get covered up or touched up repeatedly. I also don’t want to go to a tattoo artist and bother him repeatedly to the point that he either overcharges me or just doesn’t care. I guess I am just too picky.

The tattoo I’ve set my heart on is a large pirate ghost ship that will sit on my lower leg (shin area). I’ve been searching google images to find someone who has done something similar, but mostly they are kinda trashy looking (no offense to any of the ones I saw, it’s just not my style.)

I kinda want something gastly with torn sails and with really good shadowing (dark greens, purples, etc.)

Anyone able to help me out?

Again, thanks to everyone here for such a great forum, I’ve already found a lot of great stuff while here!

Well hello there and welcome. I understand what you’re talking about as far as tacky goes. I’m all about class in the designing stage of a tat. Sail boats are a really hard design to portray on skin without looking like a stamp or something but I think I might be able to help you out. You said you didn’t want something that will have to be redone and covered right? Well I hate to break it to you but you have to get your ink reworked every 10-15 years anyway just to brighten color, fix blurs or smearing, and outline edges. Generally you go back to the same artist.

Finding a great tattoo artist is like striking oil, you’re not going to move to another area for oil after you’ve already found it, you’re going to keep using the oil you’ve found.

To find a good tattoo artist, you’ll need to do some research and ask around. If you see someone on the street with some ink you like, ask them where they got it done. Do tattoo parlor searches on the internet and see where they are. Then check their feedback on the web as well. You may even have to do some traveling to find the artist. Hell mine is six hours away, sometimes quality isn’t readily available.

You did a good thing by coming here, I’ll see if I can dig up some ships for ya. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask and again welcome to the forum.

    Thanks for the reply.

I do understand that ink needs to be touched up over the years, but that wasn’t my point. I’ve seen/worked with alot of people who have gotten tattoos and they are really excited when they get it, but weeks/months later they realize that “oh hey, he (the artist) fucked up here.” or “man, what the fuck is this?” Basically from what I hear it’s usually a sub-par artist or a rookie. Either way, those people usually have bad drawing skills as well.

I also agree that finding a great artist is like striking gold, because most of what you find are lazy or sub-par artists. My feeling on the subject is, if I am paying for it AND it has to stay on my body for life, then fuck, I better get what I want, not what someone else tries (and fails) to do.

I know I sound like an asshole, but I just don’t want to be like every other John “I got this shitty tattoo because the guy was cheap” Smith.

Understandable and you’re not appearing to be an asshole at all. You’re wise to know what you want and know the consequences of getting something that looks like crap. I applaud your decision. Give me a few minutes and I’ll have the pictures for you.

these are great, thanks! There are a few I really liked, and alot of elements from one and another that could be added together to make something perfect! I wish that I was in amazing shape to do a side piece like some of those. Thank you very much for your help. I think I want to do some coloring like the pirate ships from the Scooby Doo movie, but a lot less Technicolor, if you know what I mean.

Totally understand. Print out a couple of those and show your artist which elements from each picture you want incorporated in the tattoo. Best of luck!
