So I’ve been mulling over some ideas for my first piece(s) and I’m having a little bit of trouble coming up with a design I like.

Basically I’m looking at getting a quote, well two quotes.

#1 “I am confined, only free to expand myself within boundaries.”

#2 “Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you.”

The problem is I’d really like to avoid just tattooing the direct quotes straight on to me. I’m trying to figure out a way to incorporate them into a design or emblem. Something that expresses the words in a manner other than having to read it.

I have some ideas like a man trapped inside a mirrored box, or images that would convey that I’m my own jailer so to speak. But what I think I really want something more, well I’m not really sure how to describe it. A way to turn the actual words into an object.

I’m a big fan of work by M.C. Escher from 1940 and forward. Examples:

I’m not looking for for a huge piece like some of the links, more just something that is illusory.

I’m not sure I’ve done a good job describing my dilemma or making it more confusing. Hope someone can help.:(

Nick, I really dig the 2nd and 4th one.. The 2nd one would be awesome, with both quotes running along the outside. Very detailed, good sized, black/grey-wash would be a great first tattoo..

You could position it in the same location I’m doing my transmutation circle.

Hmm that’s not a bad idea..

The thing thats worrying me is that even scaled down it is a fairly detailed piece. I’m afraid of going to small to appreciate the intracacies. But at the same time something as large as I’m picturing it should be, on my ribcage as a first tattoo seems like a pretty big leap. Definately cool. But a huge commitment. (Not that smaller tattoos aren’t as big of a deal.)

Besides I’d need to hit the gym first. 😀 When are you gonna get that bike so we can start riding?

Youve seen how several small tattoos turn out. Each cool in their own right, but end up looking clustered, and kinda random. Go big, you’ll appreciate it more in the long run, and as far as it being on the ribs, pashaw.. lol.. Just do it.. Go big or go home, little puppy.. LOL..

As far as the bikes, I have to get one, then pay a couple hundo to referb the other one as well.. All in time sir.. TTA parts need to sell faster.

you could not have any of those designs above unless they were quite large, they would not make for good tattoo material otherwise.
choose your artist well , and personally i would advise yoou go to somebody that does portraits

Yeah I realize that. The links were more of an idea of what type of style I like. Not exactly what I want to get tattooed. But I know what you mean. The more I think about the sphere rings (#2) I’m growing to like the idea. I may want to tweak it some but the concept is nice and I love how it’s intricate.

True. At first I was opposed to the ribcage as a location for the first tat. But now that I think about it I like the location. seems more appropriate, something I’ll have no problem concealing and stll leaves large areas available for work down the road. I’m still debating an appropriate size though. I’m thinking of an effective diameter of 7-10″. But I’ll play around with some templates after work and see what fits.

Thanks for the input guys!
