I really like the idea of getting a tattoo of a phoenix, specially a Japanese one to go with my other tattoo and to keep with a theme. To me the phoenix has a bunch of meaning, life, rebirth, family, fire, and so on, however, further research indicated the symbol represents fidelity and the empress along with the above mentioned meanings. I wanted to put it out there and ask people what they think, and if you often see this tattoo on guys? Hey, maybe some design idea. I was thinking of making it a negative tattoo, with the phoenix being white and coming from a dark space on my back representing what it is leaving and adding a splash of red in the feathers to represent fire. Iin the future I am planning to get tattoos of all the elements as down my spine I have the five Japanese elements in Kanji. If anyone has pictures for reference I would also apperciate it.

    Hi

I have seen quite a few phoenix tattoos – mostly on women but a few on men.
Both styles tended to be very distinct in masculine and feminine concepts, so I would not worry about that aslong as you get an artist who draws the image you like.

They have always struck me as an image of rebirth.

The only suggestion I have is that white ink does not always hold very well and can often fade rapidly – to have such a large tattoo done in mostly white maybe an expensive investment as would need very regular touch ups.

My advice is get the outline done in a darker ink and then emphasise with a good amount of shadows and shading. The red will be very bold against the tattoo anyway making it stand out.

I think it would make some great ink.

    Take care

Thank you for your response, that is my idea, I should have included that in the post above. That is to make all the negative space, white space, be my skin colour.
