I’ve been trying to come up with a new tattoo, and thought maybe you all could help. It’s been a rough year, as I have lost a few loved ones… I would like to commemorate them with one tattoo, incorporating symbols to represent each person. The problem is, I can’t figure out how to tie them all together! They do fit into an overall nature/animal theme, and I would also like some essence of spirituality (Jewish, Eastern or New-Age). Here are the items I want to include, with a * next to the ones that are mandatory – the rest are optional, as I realize this can’t ALL be in one tattoo.
Purple & green butterfly *
Bluebird *
Turkey (don’t ask, LOL) *
Roses *
Pansies
Rainbow
Tree of Life (the Jewish symbol)
Dove
Any ideas on how to put these images together?? I could also use help on where to place it… I already have ink on the following body parts: Upper left arm, upper right arm, upper back, left breast, hip, left anklet, back of left foot/ankle, and inner right ankle. I was thinking of putting it on the outer right ankle, or trying to squeeze it onto an upper arm. Unfortunately I can’t really go below the elbow, otherwise I’d love to go with the inside lower arm. I’m not too picky on size, but probably can’t afford anything ginormous.
P.S. I already have an artist (the same guy who’s been doing my backpiece), so I really just need a concept – at least something to put into words, when I go see him next month. I’m completely useless and laughably bad at art, and therefore can’t sketch a darned thing for him. ๐ Thanks for any help!!
its a lot for one tattoo so i think you will be best having it on your arm.
and it will prob be a large tattoo ( half sleeve ? )

Yeah, I know it’s a lot for one tattoo! But I was thinking it might work in a “piece,” where the components are blended in… like a tree with the 4 birds scattered on/around it. I’d love to get a half-sleeve, but not sure that would work with my current tats. I’ll post pictures of what I already have in a bit, so you can see what I’m working around. Thanks!
the best thing to do is call in and see your artist or make a phone call or email…..
tell them the key elements like you listed above and get them to draw something up for you.
most of us on here are super busy with drawing work up for our own clients inbetween working and helping out and joining in on the forums we frequent, at the moment its busy period so 7 days a week is devoted to clients.

Already did that… we have an appointment on September 13th, but he said it would be good to come in with a concept. So like I said, I’m not looking for somebody to draw a design – just to help with a basic idea!
Ummmmm, isn’t this forum for people to ask for help? If you’re busy I understand, but I was just hoping somebody would help with ideas. Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of this forum, though….
id help if i had a clear idea where to go with this tattoo but im stuck with the turkey ๐
all i could think of is
the tree is the back ground , one of the birds in the tree and one flying away
the turkey in front of the tree standing in grass thats mixed with pansies and the butterfly on a pansy .
the rainbow can be back ground shading and the roses could finish the sides of your tattoo ??
what ever you do it will be a very different tattoo and if done well it will prob be very cool and interesting .
Thanks for the input, ButterflyKisses! I’ve been looking at pictures, and think I came up with a good solid concept… it’s going to be the Tree of Life, with the birds & butterfly flying or sitting around it. I decided to ditch the rainbow and flowers, since it was too much for one design. I’ll probably put it on my lower (outer) right leg, since that seems to be just right for a tree shape. I would go with the arm, but my other tattoos there wouldn’t mesh well. Anyway, I’ll let you know how it goes. ๐
Here are a few examples of what I’m imagining, in terms of the tree design:

this is exactly where I want mine placed
In my opinion you shouldn’t ditch the rose…
A single rose that grows at the base of the tree could add a lot to the design and make it much more unique…
Or maybe put the rose in the mouth of one of the bird like she’s carrying it somewhereโฆ
But it will demand a delicate and very complex work….
BTW,
the Jewish tree of life isn’t a real tree but a much more complex design that represent the ten spheres of the soul, or something like it, I never was strong at the kabala…
It looks something like this: http://z.about.com/d/altreligion/1/0/N/q/1/tol17.jpg
But I’m against religion in almost every single aspect of my life so I believe that an actual tree would do you better ๐

Yeah, maybe I will keep it… we’ll see what my artist says, because I’m sure he’ll be honest if it doesn’t work.

I feel ya, but I was raised in the Jewish faith – not super religious, but more culturally observant. And since everyone I’m commemorating with this tattoo is/was Jewish too, it seems fitting to use the Tree of Life. As for the design, it is also depicted as a “normal” looking tree in most artwork. At my old synagogue we had a Tree of Life outside the sanctuary, with small leaf-shaped plaques representing people who had passed… my father got a plaque for each of his parents, and I’d always touch/kiss them whenever I passed the display. Anyway, thanks for the input! ๐
cool glad your getting some solid ideas together .
when do you go and see your tattooist
I have an appointment on September 17th, mostly to do a session on my backpiece… but I told him I wanted to discuss another tattoo while there, and he said we might even do it the same day. I was planning something smaller at first, though, so it might have to wait for another day. ๐
have we seen your back piece yet ?
last week while i was getting some more work on my half sleeve i was talking about other ideas and mentioned that i fancy a peacock tattoo and my artist has been wanting to do one in ages so it looks like im having a large leg tattoo done next
Here’s an example of the more traditional & artistic depiction of the Tree of Life: http://www.rebeccashore.com/images/adults/tree_new_big.jpg
Hey… flowers do look cool at the base! ๐
Nope! I’ll upload some pictures later… should I just start a personal photo album on here?
Awesome… I love peacock designs. ๐
