So I got my first tattoo last year and I’ve started to think about new projects. I love the work of the renaissance painter Caravaggio and while I’m not really into angels as a “thing”, I do really like this particular one:
I figure it can tie in quite easily with later projects too. So I know what I want and I know who I want to do it (Carlos Torres would be ideal for this one, also want work from Dmitry Samohin and Robert Hernandez – any of the three would be awesome). The only thing I need to figure out is where to put it…
My existing one is on my left arm (covering outside of upper arm). Somewhere on the right side of my body would even things out. Possibly right shoulder or right scapula. Any other suggestions?
That would work on your left side of your chest with the angel up on to your shoulder.
Thanks Buttwheat, like I said I am ONLY getting the angel. I’m not looking to get my chest done at this point (I’m a girl so there are “obstacles” ;-)).
I’ll edit the first picture to exclude what I don’t want.
Anywhere would work. If u do it on your arm, you can easily turn it into a sleeve. Do u want color or b/g? All 3 of thoe artists have totally different styles and are all fairly far from each other. If u want full color dmitry is your man. Torres is booked at least a year and last i contacted dmitry he was booked until november. Good luck, looks like it will be a dope project.
B/G for sure. Personally, I’m not feeling Dmitry’s color work when it comes to skin tones (though loving his color work on other things, like the red and yellow leaves). They do have different signature styles, but they all display an extremely good command of shadowing and realism in general. They also all have displayed previous work that have me convinced that I would be happy with either one of them, though as I said, I favor Torres for this piece. Hernandez is best known for his dark horror stylistic freehand style, but he does other stuff as well and I have spoken to him and know he is a big Caravaggio fan (as is Torres, I have spoken to him earlier as well). It is easier to get appts with Torres when he is doing conventions (which I know as I had a spot offered on fairly short notice – sadly couldn’t take it), though I have no problem waiting a year or two. I also have no issue with traveling – for my first one, I flew to Russia (to Den Yakovlev).
Hernandez is best known for his B/G work, but IMO he is AMAZING with color. I agree that the three artists I mentioned are different (Torres=pencil texture, Hernandez=smooth spraypaintish, Samohin=watercolor feel), but to say that they they have totally different styles… meh…
For those of you who are not familiar wtih the artists:
Carlos Torres:
Robert Hernandez:
Dmitry Samohin:
And it is only fair to include some signature pieces:
Carlos Torres:
Robert Hernandez:
Dmitry Samohin:
i still think they have different styles. if you give them all the same subject matter, yes they will all be amazing and similar, but their portfolios are very different. they will all kill it tho, that is agreed.
i also have to disagree about dmitrys skin color tone, but art is subjective so to each their own. but good luck on whoever you choose. it will be a sick piece.
i have an appointment with torres coming up soon, i will post pics when its done.
EDIT: please post pics of the den piece, i would love to see it. he is badass also.
Here it is. Need to get a better photo. Also need to fix the left eye, tho.
Good luck with your Torres appt! Should be awesome.
That is awesome! I really like the work coming out of russia and the eu right now. I wish i had easier access to artists over there. Dmitry is someone i really want to get work from. I keep telling him he should come to america! I have always wanted work from hernandez, he guests at 2 of the shops i get work from when he does his america tour, but he is booked too far out for me to have a chance. That and the dollar is so weak right now. Tommy lee charges 350 euro when he is here in the states, that comes out to 500usd/hr!!!
