Hello everybody, I am new to this whole tattoo thing but I have been trying to figure out what i would want tattooed to me for a long time. I have finally decided what I want. I think i have settled on a tattoo of M.C. Escher’s hands drawing themselves but instead of drawing, they would be tattooing themselves. I brought a picture of what i wanted to a local shop and they just asked me if i was a tattoo artist then proceeded to tell me that nobody would tattoo it to me because I’m not a tattoo artist. My girlfriend was with me and suggested that i get something smaller for my first tattoo and they pretty much laughed at her and suggested that i get a half sleeve instead 0.o Anyway, like I said I’m not experienced with this at all and some feedback on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Oh by the way, they said the tattoo should take up my upper back and would cost around 800 dollars.
I understand your situation. I recommend you to read some good books on tattoo. You will get ‘Got Ink?’ an excellent 176 page e book at http://www.targettattoo.com for FREE. All the best in your first tattoo.
So you’re wanting hands tattooing each other as your first tattoo? See if you like getting tattooed first… It seems to me you’re jumping the gun a little. I’d say get something that means something to you. Something that has to do with your life already.
I like Charvak’s idea. Educate yourself a little before getting anything done at all. I know I researched a lot of things about getting ink done before I finally went through with it. For example.. I’m hypoallergenic and I had to research inks, metals, and allergies.
Finally.. you have to mentally prepare yourself for some pretty gnarly pain.

i suggest that u make something small 1st..and will proceed to the big tattoo if u can stand the pain…
actually the tattoo not very hurt..hehe LOL
You know, I went big for my first tattoo. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s having something huge that doesn’t mean anything that bothers me.
wow..just show it to we..more bigger tattoo u make..is more awesome..
oh gays, if you have information about tattoo you can visit my site and free for you.
I went big for my first tattoo… and i havent regretted it yet… i havent regretted any of my tattoos. But, I do agree with what everyone else is saying… find something that has meaning to you… remember this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life. All of my tattoos have significant meaning to me, and will always remind me of that point in my life. Do you only want this tattoo to remind you of getting your first tattoo? or do you want it to represent more?
I as well went large for my first, and even though the artist that did it wasnt very good, and it is all blown out, I am still glad I did. It is part of me, and even though it is flawed I dont want to get it re-done. and also, if you are like me, once you get a little ink, you cant stop.
about the pain, i dont really think they are that painfull, but the closest thing i have ever heard to describing the pain is if you take a sewing needle that is red-hot, and run it along your skin. not that I have ever done that, but I imagine that it feels alot like getting ink.
I have a better description of the pain: It’s more like a 3rd degree sun burn (with bubbles and puss) and someone taking a needle and digging in it.
dont know about the puss and all, I dont think they hurt that much, especially after the first min or so till you can get some endorphans runnin…
No no the puss and all that is from the sun burn. And my endorphins didn’t kick in until about 30 minutes into my tattoo. Craaapppy huh?
yea its different for everyone… I have been told I have a high tollerance for pain, but also there are a few tricks:
before you get a tattoo, eat some candy. the high calories from the sugar will help to speed the bodies reaction time…
breathe! talk to the artist, it keeps you breathing, regular breathing helps your body to relax (especially the muscles underneath the area being tattooed)… The more relaxed you are the less it will hurt, and the easier time the tattoo artist will have.
As the others have said, I would suggest something smaller, just for the 1st Tat. Just to make sure it’s something for you and you really need to put alot of thought into getting a piece, before jumping in. I know alot of people who have some ink, they reget getting. I have never had that problem. I may reget the artist I’ve used, but not the ink. Now I only get my work done, by my cousin, who is an Outstanding Artist.
It’s funny how everyone is different, in describing the pain & how they handle it. To me, it’s like a bad sun burn, that someone keeps rubbing on, with a little stinging here-n-there. As for talking to the aritist, I find it much easier to ‘Zone-out’ but stareing at 1 spot on the wall, and drifitng off into a zone. I just had a piece on my right side ribcage, that took 3 hours. The few times my artist wanted to talk, it brougt me back to the surface of the moment and the pain was higher, but when I Zone-out, I can handle it much more. I only make sure I eat a full meal, before we start. Maybe next time, I’ll try eating some candy during the sitting. I hear alot of people say it helps!
Dave…
if you dont talk to the tattoo artists, (for the first timers) then remember to breathe… It is more common than you think for people to forget to breathe, and they pass out… usually people pass out from not breathing more often than from pain…
remember… like half the people I see all have tats, men women, army guys, and soccer moms, so if they can take it, dont you think you can too?
if you feel light headed the sugar will help replenish you, as well as making your hormones production rate to increase.
I think the analogy to a sunburn is really good… my fav part of the tattoo is when it is all done and the artist washes it off, ohhhhh, feels good to have that cooooool ness on it!
