Hello
I am a keen amateur writer and tattoo enthusiast. I have worked on a number of projects such as text based gaming and academic research papers.
I am wanting to do a book/net-book on the issues of tattooing as art vs taboo, based on culture and personal experiences.
I am wanting to interview tattooed people to get their story on;
Why they got tattooed. The meaning of their tattoo(es) (and pictures of it if possible). Their experiences of being tattooed within their culture and how their peers react to their ink. Any positive or negative attitudes they have had because of their tattoos.
I am keen to get a mix of cultures, walks of life, and styles of tattoos so that I can expand the insight of people who have an interest in tattooing or who have no experience of the art.
So people know what my intent is I will outline this below;
1. I do not want to infringe on any copyright or human rights. I would request that each volunteer sign a disclaimer stating that they give their permissions, for any pictures or experiences, as long as clear acknowledgement is given to the owner and/or the artist.
2. No persons under 18 years of age. The UK is very strict on the interviewing or pictures of minors.
3. There is very little prospect of any profit being made from this venture. I am doing it because i love to write. What this means is I will not be able to pay. Gracious acknowledgements and a copy of the book/net-book (if it is ever published) is what I can offer.
4. Whilst mild nudity which shows a tattoo is acceptable. I would ask that any pictures that could classed as strong pornographic not be sent. (I am still shocked by a male whale tattoo that has been burned into my mind.) 😮
If you are interested in participating please feel free to PM me.
Thanks
Matthew
So, I’ve just found the thread that I mentioned I could’nt find in my pm to you!
Ok dude, yeah; well all of my ink has a story. I could natter for paragraphs and paragraphs about my ink and my expiriences etc. So, fire away!
As for that whale tattoo that has been burnt onto your noggin, have you ever seen that famous dragon picture? If you have, you’d know! It makes you go wow! Then, why? In the same breath.

That is the kind of material I am after!
I have read many fine tattoo books with great art but there was no passion in the images as I had no idea what motivated the person to have it done.
I am also trying to show to people that having tattoos is not a negative thing and can enhance/symbolise who and what we are – as well as having great ink!
I have sent you a PM – it has my email address if interested let me know and I will get the ball rolling – it is generally down to the inidvidual how much they want to say.
So far I have one person although many tattoos has specifically wanted to focus on one – which has most meaning to them. Another has over 45 tats and wants to tell me about the history of each one.
It is all great I am still in the early research stages so all input is highly valued.
Cheers
Matthew
Sweet dude.
I’ve replied to your pm and will e-mail you proper in a moment.
I understand completely where you are coming from! Myself, I have many projects I am working on and things I’d like to do, but mostly concerning ‘art’ type things.
I love to write, but only really on an amateur level and I have often thought that I could produce a better tattoo book than the average on the market so, I’d love to help and participate.
