i went to a tattooist today a mid twenties girl, and got a tattoo on my back, my first tattoo on my back it felt like a real nice massage and i really enjoyed it, this time as soon as she started it was excruciating, and its weeping which is not normal for me with my usual tattooist. I noramlly can happily sit for an 8 hour session, i sat for 2 and half hours, and that was enough, the girl said its the place which is lower back just under the cross on my back if you check my pics, does anyone have any opinion on it, as i dont know whether i am being harsh or whether she was butchering my back? i have spent many hours under the needle and it was worse than the tattoo on my ribs? any info would be good as i really dont want to go back to her but will if it was just me being a sook lol

    Hi Batp

I have been worked on by 3 artists and each one has a different feel. The lion was done by a guy who was like a surgeon and was very light handed, my second was done a guy who was more heavy handed but not overbearing.

The third however was chewing through my leg like a dog on a bone. I swear he overworked the area and I ended up going to another tattooist after it had healed to get it retouched as the ink was not taking.

The region she is working on is quite a painful area as there is a huge cluster of nerves at the base of the spine that can maginfy the pain somewhat.

My concern is the weeping of the tattoo – it sounds like she has overworked the area a bit too much or applied too much pressure.

If you are not happy with the artist or feel they are too heavy handed my advice is try another artist. They hurt (as you know) but should not be unbearable agony.

    Take Care

hello fellow kiwi person lol, tattoos shouldnt be unbearable, although in saying that it really does depend on where its placed. See how it heals, i have people who i tattoo that try to go to sleep as its not hurting then i have people that say they feel like im carving them up lol, ( but they come back for more) Hey tattoos hurt! thats the reality, but if its really severe pain i’d change the artist personally.

What she said. But you might also want to consider that different people experience different levels of pain than others.

For instance, when I got my back tattoo done, I slept right though an entire six hour session. My artist said the owner of the shop (that was before he bought it out) kept coming in wondering what that rumbling sound was. Aparentally, I was snoring.

So spine, no problem. On the other hand, when I got my wrist done, the only thing that kept me from sobbing due to the pain was my wife sitting there making fun of me for being a wuss.

Now contrast my sister, who, like me, only uses my artist. She got her spine, wrist, and freaking genitals covered in ink and didn’t even bat an eye. Well, that’s not entirely true–she came like a bastard when he tattooed her vagina. I never wanted to hear my sister having a screaming orgasm, but that’s exactly what happened.

Assuming your artist is competent, it’s all just a matter of how much your body can take, and if you can suck it up.

Not saying you’re a pussie, but I am saying that just because it hurts doesn’t mean she’s a fuck up.

    Love. Peace. Metallica.

yep, everybody has a different pain threashold on different parts of the body, it would be boring if we were all the same and that tattoo’s didnt hurt lol…

when my wife had her first tattoo done,( before i was doing them) she had a tribal on her lower spine, she could not walk or sleep properly for over 2 weeks, half the problem was that it is a generally painfull are and secondly becvause he overworked it big time….

it would be best to post an image up so we can all see it and give a beter more constructive reply,
    its hard to comment without evidence lol.. ;

without sounding rude if you check my pics i am not exactly a virgin to getting tattooed, have had wrists, by the armpits and ribs done and had no problems, have been to see my usual artist and also a couple of other ones as i went out of town for a couple of days and they have confrimed that this girl cocked it up the ink is way too deep, and the bg scabs on my back already, not just a nicely healing tattoo, also the ink is not sitting in the skin like it should, and yeah i know tattoos hurt thats part of the fun but no wonder i struggled she has chopped me up quite a lot, and that has been confirmed by my usual artist an 2 others that have never met this girl before, i will stick to my usual artist and only those i KNOW are of a good reputation, i certainly wont look through a portfoilio of work and decide.

I’m not a tattoo virgin either, but I will say that my newest tattoo hurt like a mad bastard. Maybe it’s because it’s a cover so she ws inking scar tissue…maybe it’s because it’s on the back of my neck where there are nerve clusters. And this is the only one that wept. For the first 2 days there was enough weeping that I had to kep checking my back to make sure it didn’t get on my tank top. I called my artist first, who assured me that not every tattoo weeps and that it a natural process for your body. Weeping is just your body pushing lyphatic fluid to the top of the skin to create a “scab”. This was also confirmed by my personal physcian (he’s a tattoo enthusist as well).

I dunno due, I’d wait to see what it looks like when it heals…not that your normal artist is wrong…but there are no guarantees.

I*’d be going back there and telling her to take a look at what she did, in the state its in. This sort of shit pisses me off, if she’s overworking the skin like that she shouldnt be in a studio:mad:

i really agree with you izarrasink i may have come accross a bit strange asking about what i did but its the first time i have been carved up by a artist that could maybe do with a few pointers, dont get me wrong her portfolio showed some good work and the part she has done even though simple was done well just far far too deep and now my back where it was tattooed is a big scab only 2 days after and still leaking ink. I will just stick to my usual artist he said he will fix it up for nothing. Just thought i would share as a warning to others to do some research on an artist before they tuch you with a needle, as once its started its in your skin, a good portfolio is not a sign that the artist is competent in all areas of tattooing, i thought people were being a bit over the toop when they say research your artist but they are not it is important as this has left me very sour about the experience and if it was my first would have put me off a lot. and yes i will be returning to show her what she did and to inform her she will not be finishing it and try to explain that with respect i think she needs to adjust her needles 🙂

your usual artist must be a good sort to fix it up for ya for free, and good for you, i think she needs to take a look at what she’s done

yeah well he is one of my better friends, so he dont mind, i should just stuck with him but i wanted to see what other artists were like too. but gisborne the city i live in is a small place i dont think the kind of work done on me if that is her usual will allow her to be in business for long as it is only a small city and word travels pretty quick about stuff like this.

Always an interesting topic guys. My opinion is the Tattoo has been overworked. Specially if you are still weeping etc.
Yes, everybody will feel different pressures etc, with another artist. Alot of tattooists are very heavy handed…..It should be properly applied with the needles, not the weight & pressure of the hand.
I would suggest stick your main artist

i have had 3 independant artists look at it and all agreed that its way too deep, because a) still weeping etc, b) none of the lines are nice the ink has gone in and gone funny i cant remember the term they used but it has “cracked)” or blotched or something,c) it had a blue line around it or something too and also becasue my usual artist knows my pain tolerance he was super surprised i could not sit through it. so anyways i went back in today to cancel my appointment to get it finished and they asked why so i told them my opinion, and they told me it was all my fault that i hadnt looked after it, and that i could not handle getting a tattoo and that it was of no fault of theirs, i got none of my money back even though i had paid for the full tattoo before it was started, I am left very sour about this some people sould never be given the opportunity to touch people with a tattoo machine if they cannot accept responsibility should they not do things correctly.so now i have joined the make sure you research your artist carefully club.
    🙂
