Check out my OM tattoo please. Does this look like an OM to you? What do you guys think????
It is a slight variation on the traditional style but I would certainly recognize that as an Om, I have seen much more obscure variations! The only difference is the fact that the bottom part on the right hand side curves further up and crosses through the line, whereas the traditional design has a gap and is more symmetrical. Why, are you unhappy with it?
Well, I was really concerned because the lower right side was not suppose to be that low. It was originally suppose to be higher than the bottom of the “3” as it is in the traditional style. I think the guy messed up. I was fearful that this symbol would not carry the same meaning if it looked so different. I am glad to know that you would recognize it. That does make me feel better!
I must be out of the loop because of the question im about to ask
What does “OM” stand for?
also something i’d like to touch on concerning the 3rd star of the three. Not that theres anything wrong with it but is see this kinda thing all the time. The first star was almost perfect the second looked like he was gettin impatient and the third just kinda look like… he just said ‘” whatever”. Why do some tattoo artists do this??
the peice as a whole looks great tho i do like it
Not good linework, im not up with the play on the OM symbol myself. Stars would be easily fixed,
No, the meaning of it hasn’t changed at least.
Examples of other variations of the trad. symbol –

Also, if you look on the wikipedia site, you’ll see that the symbol varies to an almost unrecognizable amount depending on the scripture it is seen in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aum
It says half way down the page:
“Om is written in different ways in different places. The most common form symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s. The upper curve is the head; the lower large one, the stomach; the side one, the trunk; and the semi-circular mark with the dot, the sweetmeat ball (modaka) in Lord Ganesha’s hand. Thus Om symbolizes everything – the means and the goal of life, the world and the Truth behind it, the material and the Sacred, all form and the Formless.”
(markus that should answer your question) – so you’ll see the exact form of it isn’t too important, it is just not the most traditional form, but that does not make it wrong/meaningless. It is still the Om.
That being said – this does not make your artist’s poor job okay. Did he not use a stencil? If he has done something different to the design you gave him then in your shoes I would be marching back and demanding a refund with a threat to put the word out what a shit ‘artist’ he is. You didn’t give him a very complex job and if he can’t manage that then I wonder what he can manage!
Hi
As Azure has said the ‘OM’ does not have a fixed way of writing it as long as incoporates the idea of the God Ganesh in his endless form.
The shape is not a problem I was going to ask if that was your unique take on the symbol.
My advice is look at your artist again for any future work as this time you came out ok on the otherside but does not sound it is like what you asked for.
The outline could do with a small amout of more linework by a better artist to really bring out the best it can be.
That said I do like that tattoo.
Take Care
