So, two nights before my latest appointment, (more shading on an upper back piece) I injured my foot. I’m now on painkillers for my foot.

Is it safe and/or good/bad for the tattoo to be under just 1-2 Tramadol? What if I take them now and give my body about 5 hours to flush most of it out before the tattoo?

It’s only because of my foot, I’ve never had a bad experience from pain when getting tattooed, but my leg hurts like crazy. I could go without the tramadol if need be, (I’m more concerned about the tattoo) but I’d rather not have to deal with my foot while getting tattooed.

Can anybody help me out? Thanks.

    Hi Shane

I checked out the contents of Tramodol also known as Ultram

    DESCRIPTION (Link http://www.opioids.com/tramadol/prescribe.html)
Ultram (tramadol hydrochloride) is a centrally acting analgesic. The chemical name for tramadol hydrochloride is (±)cis-2-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-1-(3-methoxyphenyl cyclohexanol hydrochloride.

Plasma concentrations of racemic tramadol are predictable over a 50 mg to 100 mg single-dose range. This is also true under multiple-dose conditions. Steady state is achieved after two days of dosing Ultram by a 100 mg q.i.d. regimen (maximum plasma concentration was 592 ± 177 ng/ml). The plasma half-life of tramadol following a single and multiple dosing was 6 and 7 hours, respectively. This increase in half-life upon multiple dosing is not considered to be clinically significant or to warrant dosage adjustment for chronic use.

In plain english that means it contains the same qualities as aspirin (blood thinning) and will last in the blood for 6-7 hrs after each dose.

Basically you could bleed out on your tattoo more than normal and there is a very small risk of it affecting breathing. That is a side effect but your body will be under the stress of the tat been done as well as dealing with any pain or swelling in your injury.

I personally would heal your leg up first and tattoo later – health before ink.

    Take care
    Matthew

Thank you. In your opinion, would there be any risks in taking them soon AFTER the tattoo?

I can stand not being on them for a few hours, but I’m gonna want to get back on them after the tattoo. How long should I wait?

    Hi Shane

I cannot and would not advise you on something that may put your health at risk. It would be wrong for me to do so. I do not know how much you bleed, if you have any other health issues, the amount of ink you are getting done etc.

My advice is weigh up the facts and decide if you wish to take the risks.

The tattoo would need at least 24 hrs to clot properly.

I am sorry I cannot help you more on the matter.

But good luck with what you decide.
    Matthew

    PS
My own opinion is lay off the ink until you are off painkillers – but that is me as a person speaking.

Okay, for reasons I’m not going to go into, a guy hit me with a baseball bat and broke my rib. While he severely overreacted, I did sorta have it coming, so I can’t bitch TOO much about it.

At any rate, I had an appointment to get my second tattoo two weeks later. I wasn’t on pain meds, I was just gritting my teeth and bearing it. No reason involved–I just had a real hard on to prove what a badass I was when I was a young man.

But my artist, when told about it, canceled my appointment. Didn’t even give me an option. He said wih my body under that kind of strain already that I ran the risk of blood clots, bleeding like a stuck pig, infection…he had a list, it’s been years.

In short, from my own personal experience, I’d just cancel my tattoo until I was healthy. Despite being purposeful, a tattoo is an injury, and it puts strain on your body. It’s why many people (myself included) feel exhausted after getting inked. It’s because you’re body’s in “HOLY SHIT! I’M HURT!” mode.

Besides, just because the inking’s over doesn’t mean that that tattoo ain’t still an open wound. Taking the Tramadol after the ink will most likely make you bleed like a stuck pig.

    Love. Peace. Metallica.

I can tel you , also from experience, that your body can only handle so much trauma at one time. I’ve ALOT of health problems…so I hae to be SUPER careful with tats and geting new holes in my body.

I can also tell you from a medical standpoint that ANY chemical…including pain pills, is to some level a toxin to your pody and your body will do whatever needed to remove the “toxin”…including pushing it through your skin.

    In short, reschedule dude.

    TOTALLY OFF TOPIC…in a s Shanegasm a cousin to the Big O? Just wondering….
