Hi all long time. I have read lots of conflicting stuff about koi fish and was wondering if anyone could put me straight before i go get one in the wronge colour and wrong place. Thanx d:)
Hi DaddyHulk – Great nick btw 😀
Ok so I pulled down some info from a koi book I had kicking around Tamadachi M (1990). “Koi varieties”. The Cult of the Koi. This is one damn heavy book to read but gives you a full inside and out of everything about Japanese Koi also their colours.
To save you the hassle here is a quick sumamry from it;
Taisho Sanshoku – Speckled Koi – white with orange and black spots.
Yamabuki – Very pale yellow koi.
Platina – Pure white koi
Tosai Shiro-Utsuri – These are white and black/blue speckled.
Tanchō – Red patch on head
Asagi – Light blue top and red bottom colouring
Ōgon – Single colour koi but metallic scales (thick scales)
You can also get them in green etc – pretty much any colour as it depends on the breed.
The main thing to remember is the Koi is a form of carp and the Japanese breeds are often crossed with other carp eg German to get a change in scale colour or even no scales at all.
Hope it helps
Matthew
