i was wondering if it was better for me to go and get the design for my tattoo before i actually get the tattoo or should i just do it all on the same day? what do artists usually prefer?

I would suggest getting the design before you go for a couple of reasons. The main one is this way you’ll have put some thought in to what you want and so it’ll be more likely to be a tattoo you really like and won’t regret it in a few years. Secondly it’ll save a lot of time. If you know roughly what you want but can’t find the exact design take some examples with you and the tattooist should be able to draw something up you want.

Snerkler has got the right idea. ((nods)) You should definitely have an art concept in mind when you visit the tattoo shop. Whether you’ve got an existing design that needs tweaking or an idea that needs professional sculpting, your tattoo artist should be happy to help. Some of my favorite tatts were sketched on the fly by a very talented tattoo guy who listened to my ideas and used his skills to bring them to life! =]

In my opinion, getting a tattoo should require a minimum of three trips. The first trip is to tell your artist what you want, and get a date to come back for trip two, which is where he shows you the design he whipped up. You do it this way just in case what he did sucks, and it gives him a chance to redo it without losing other appointments. The third is obviously the tattoo.

    blahhh….
i talked to the artist today for a design and he told me he wouldnt do my piece on my ribs because it would be my first tattoo and he doesnt do big pieces on the ribs for first timers because of the pain factor.

so im going to get the other tattoos that i had planned on getting first instead. thanks for the advice guys.

    thats what he said.
he said its gonna be too big of a piece for a first timer and its a huge jump. he said he wouldnt do it but i could ask someone else in the shop to do it but not him. and he said he’d do a small piece if i wanted but not that big of a piece.

i dont really mind because i didnt know it would take the time he said (20 hours at least) and i dont have that kinda money right now.

im just going to get the other tattoos that i had planned on getting after this piece but imma just do it in reverse order now.

Well, if it’s big enough to cover your ribs on one side, then, yes, it could take twenty hours, but I’ve known people that’ve started out with a flippin body suit.

Seriously though, if you’re okay with it, then all’s well, but I still think the guy is full of eight kinds of shit.

yeah, i dont see a point in rushing to get one tattoo when i had other tattoos planned and when a tattoos always gonna be there so there’s no real rush.
