    Hi there,

Not sure exactly where this particular post should be posted…

But as a keen photographer and because I am also training to be a forensic scientist (SCI), I am interested to know the methods various people have used to photograph their tattoo’s…

Only different lighting conditions can effect the way the tattoo looks, colours change etc…

So to reproduce a tattoo exactly, is it best to photograph it using only natural daylight?

Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated…

    Hi PB

I would recommend a studio type lighting to get a ‘professional’ shot of a tattoo.

Natural daylight can create artificial shadows and shading of the subject. Flash can over expose but with the right back lighting and exposure can really show off a tattoo.

Personally I take mine with a standard digital but if it was something important I would borrow the pro Nikon SLR which my mate uses as that can capture a gnat scratching it’s nuts.

My advice is practice in a variety of lighting conditions and see which gives you the result you want.

    Take Care

My father is a photography teacher, and one of his students took a photo of a tattoo on my back in a studio. The photo looked great. I don’t think she used a direct light on my back, because the glare would be in the way. Instead she used two lights on either side of my back and had me move backwards/forwards until the lighting was just right.

Thats how I would do it, using to studio flashes perhaps at 45 degree angles…

Perhaps one a stop brighter then the other…

Looks like I need to find some guinee pigs…
