Hi, I read that for Robert De Niro’s character in Cape Fear, he had himself tattooed with vegetable dyes that would fade out over a few months. I was just wondering if that’s possible or a load of crap?

    Hi Joker

The use of vegetable dyes for temporary tattooing is quite common and almost rivals the use of Hennah as a form of temp art.

Most actors use a mixture of stage glue and veg dye which is then either spray painted or hand painted onto the body to form a realistic looking tattoo for a film. These can last several weeks to months depending on the dye used and the amount of re-application.

In theory vegetable dye can be injected into the skin (known as organic or temporary micro-pigmentation) which would be slowly broken down by the body causing the tattoo to fade away. This is a different technique of tattooinga nd does not go to same level in the skin.

The issues with this are that the outline can sometimes be left visible for a very long time or skin reactions have been known causing the skin to redden or blister.

I am sorry if I am been vague as to how it can be used as there is a very particular process to get the dyes to work – I just do not want ppl thinking I know lets give myself a temp tattoo and scar or disfigure themselves horriblly.

Anyhow back to the orig question – I think it is likley he will have painted it on as the results can often look shit if injected.

    Take Care

Haha you call that vague? That was very detailed, thank you. I’m not planning on having it done or anything, I was just curious how it worked. The permanent stuff is my cup of tea ๐Ÿ™‚
