Ok, so I got a touch-up on a tattoo yesterday afternoon and some of the color is leaking a bit. Not really running out of the design, just leaking a little. I’ve heard before that this isn’t anything to be alarmed about, because it is perfectly normal. Is that true?

    Hey,

But yet again maybe you reject colour i dont know. But im sure you will get the answer you are looking for there are some pretty knowledgable people in these forums.

And would you care to share that answer, Matthew? LOL…I don’t know what happened with your response. Maybe you hit “Submit” too early by mistake.

    Damn
Sorry about that not sure but think it went link dead.

Anyhow there are 3 possible reasons neither are anything to worry about just yet.

    Reason 1.

The tattoo is starting to form the protective crust (scab) so it will flood the area with antibodies and try and flush the foreign bodies from the skin. Sometimes pigments mix with this clear liquid and blood causing a ‘colour leak’.

Normally this should end after around 3-12 hours and normally doesn’t affect the tattoo it is just excess residue.

    Reason 2.

That artist has gone a little too deep and has shovelled in a lot of ink and overworked the skin a bit too much. Similar to reason one the tattoo can ooze pigment a little until the swelling goes down and the pigment locks into the skin.

This can take upto 12-24 hrs to seal up as the wound is much deeper. The edges will liley feel raw for a while.

Both of these should be fine but keep clean and keep an eye on it if continues to ooze after a day or 2 get a Dr to look at it for any possible signs of an infection.

    Reason 3

You are one of the very few ppl on the planet who reject ink. This is actually very difficult to do and would have shown up in your first tattoos – also you would have likely suffered extreme reactiosn such as nausea, burning, vomting or going into shock.

I don’t think you are this reason.

    PS

Do not expose this to extreme sunlight or uv lamps and sure as hell do not use shower gels or bubble bath on it.

it could be cause by the skin being traumatised, if the touch up too early and the skin isnt healed yet this will have the effect of overworking the skin as above in matthews answers as well.

was it yellow, white or red by any chance??
the resons are because some people have reactions to certain reds and yellows (my body hates yellow)
and also yellow and white are a pig to get into the skin so overworking can easily happen

Thanks for all your help! I think I’m probably just being a little paranoid and need to just keep an eye on the tattoo and let nature take it’s course. It’s going to be tough not being able to show it off at the beach until June 2 (6 weeks from yesterday), but I’ll survive. And don’t worry about shower gels or body washes. I’m hesitant to even shower since getting this baby touched up yesterday, and when I do shower, I don’t even wash that arm or even get it wet at all. I won’t be going over it with a lufa or washcloth in the shower until that June 2 unveiling date too.

you need to keep it clean, so you will need to wash it and pat it dry, then place small amount of savlon or bepanthen (or whatever your artist advised) about 3 times a day

It was red. It was the red Kanji script tattoo in my album. But…**Update: I am pleased to announce that it only leaked that one time first thing this morning and hasn’t leaked again since I started the thread.

it was just the unused pigment mixed up within the white blood cells then, thats why i advise my clients to wash it with quite hot soapy water for the first wash and then use cool water after that, it opens the pores and releases the pigment that aint required, then as it cools it closes them up and locks it in…… and helps to stop it from coming off on the bed sheets lol..

im glad its healing ok for you now 😉
