Hey, I am working on the prior courses and actions to take before actual apprenticeship, would this be a good idea to take this course?

Here is the list of things it offers:
Code Of Ethics – Body Art Specialist’s Code of Ethics
Chapter 1 – Skin Anatomy and Physiology
Chapter 2 – Procedures for Studios and Artists
Chapter 3 – Bloodborne Pathogens – OSHA Summary
    Chapter 4 – OSHA Standards 29 CFR – 1910.1030
Chapter 5 – Food and Drug Administration Fact Sheet 58
Chapter 6 – State and Local Regulatory Offices

It’s an online course for certification for about 70 dollars…
Would this be a good investment to have under my belt?
Or do you think it may be a scam?

    Hi Chelly

Ok I am torn between my answers here so bear with me until the end of the post because put simply these online certificates are usually not worth the paper they are printed upon.

The tattooing institute is like any other business that can set itself up as an ‘academic’ institute and offer a course in just about anything.

Where it is let down is that many places will simply not recognise the certificate as a professional qualification because there are many affiliated courses where you can learn about BBP’s and health and safety etc by a workplace recognised provider.

So many artists may look at it and go ‘so you did an online course eh? – or did you just print that up yourself?’

    However

It does show that you have a willingness to learn and are prepared to get off your arse and research it yourself – (if you want some free stuff on bbp’s btw its in my free ebook.).

For $70 that is not so bad but it is a gesture as opposed to an ‘official’ qualification – many states in usa are not regulated for tattooing and other insist on local by-laws and certificates.

If you have the money with no feeling of loss then do it – if it is a matter of sacrifice I would say look around for more serious providers of these courses at your local colleges and such as then will be transferable to the work industry in general.

Yeah, I am pretty hesitant to do the online course.. I am so much better hands on, I seem to learn better that way…

However they do have the pathogen and the osha courses I like, but if a tattoo artist won’t even regocnize it as worth it then I guess I should turn the offer down.

I think a good idea may be to find a few great artists in my area and see what they think on the subject. I am very much into learning until it kills me.. I eat knowledge like a sponge, even if they don’t look on it highly I may do it anyway just to get as much information as possible.

    What do you think?

    Hi Chelly

I am the same I am a data geek – I like to learn so for me no knowledge is wasted knowledge.
As I say if you can afford 70 bucks you can see what you are required to know and again it shows willingness.

I am just never impressed by how they are a bit unscrupulous as much of the info can readily found on the internet for free and they (many online institutes) always put forward as how theirs is always a serious qualification when this might not be the case.

It is really a judgement call and whether you can afford the money – if it was more I would say hell no.

Talking with artists in your area is the best way to start as they can show the certificates that are needed and who provided them (I am a brit so hard to say which are required in states as vary so much).

Thanks again for all of your help. I am just going to go ahead and begin my college courses while talking to local artists about how they got their start and what they did. I don’t mind throwing in 70 bucks, but whether or not the actual site is legit at all is the real question.

I will just attend the courses and play it by ear from there.
    :]
